Why does my 89 lincoln mk 7 keep cranking over when i start it and even with the key out it wants to keep trying to start

The starter has a part called a "bendix spring" that is supposed to retract the gear when you stop attempting to start the engine. If the bendix spring breaks or simply gets stuck, then you get what you're getting. Have the starter serviced.

Starter grinds have replaced it 2 times in 3 months replaced flywheel which was ground down quite a bit still grindss

Pull the starter and check the adjustment on the pinion movement. Your problem is that the starter is spinning before fully engaging the flywheel. There is an adjustment and if you are not sure ask a auto electrician how to adjust the pinion adjustment for engagement.

Its a solenoid...it engages the bendix and truck starts...bendix should retract because power to it gets shut off by ignition switch going to "run".

Only way bendix would stay engaged or get a signal to keep turning ???

It sounds like you have either the Starter motor is shorting in side so taking out to many amps out of battery OR the battery isent up to 100% of 12 volts and down to 11.5 volts.
So get the battery check out first if ok then go to starter motor.

Starter issues

sounds like you have a bendix and ring gear problem, sounds like you have a starter bendix engagement and disengagement problem, drop starter and inspect the flywheel ring gear and starter drive gear (Bendix) .

Look for worn teeth on the flywheel it only will happen in one or two spots 180 degrees apart cause the motor always will stop in one two places... seen it a 1000 times...

It sounds like you may need a new starter. The bendix on your current starter may be dry and worn so it could be causing wear on your ring gear.

Wow it sounds like that they are not shiming the starter. On general motors products a new starter has to be shimmed, so that it lines up correctly with the flywheel. This is what is causing the flywheel/starter bolts to break and the noise you are hearing. Its not a hard process, just time consuming probably why it has not been done.
Sorry. Good luck! Dont forget to rate. Thanks, James

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, JACK UP AND SUPPORT YOUR CARAVAN. LYING ON YOUR BACK LOCATE THE STARTER WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE THROUGH THE BELL HOUSING .THERE ARE TWO 15 MILIMETER BOLTS THAT HOLDS THE STARTER ON . AFTER BREAKING THE BOLTS A 15MM WRENCH WOULD BE USEFUL.
