Drop in gas milage with drop in altitude

I live at 7000 ft in Colorado and constantly get 30 to 31 mpg hwy. I recently took a trip to Nebraska which is much lower in altitude and when I got to Nebraska my gas milage dropped to 26 mpg when I returned my gas mileage went back to 31

I would guess your car was built to the Emission Standards
for your state,altitude etc

Still a big drop in mpg

If you ever moved, you may need your computer software
reflashed for lower elevation

I would guess the MAF Sensor was out of it's range

Check to see if any codes were stored
Need professional scanner

Look at freeze frame data unless you have been back for weeks

SOURCE: check engine light comes on every time I get into high altitude

we need a trouble code to at least where to start helping you. one thing that is vital is a BARO reading of your location(call the local airport, should be approx 29-30) and the BARO PID reading of your truck,it should read approx 155-156 ....if it reads like 140 the MAF sensor will need to be replaced.

SOURCE: mileage

The factory tends to use lightweight oil,to increase fuel mileage,
not good for the life of the engine,if heavier oil was put in place, mileage could drop, but not much, maybe 1 mpg,are you sure it's not because of
extended warm up times or more idling than usual?

replace air filter, clean fuel injectors, check keep right tires pressure, different types tirers cause excessive fuel consuption,4WD drive vechicle will burn more fuel driving short distances.stopping then accelerating cause more gas for power to vechicle in motion.

2010 5.7 liter. Does the dealer have to adjust anything to improve gas mileage?

to get an an out of paramaters setting for the air fuel mixture in the ECM I would consider a change in altitude of around 3000 feet would be necessary before the ECM would need re- programming
I would suggest that you run the fault codes as the MAP/BARO sensors may be faulty
also if the driving conditions have change ( flat to hilly) will account for lower fuel economy

The MDX owner's manual says to use only 91+ octane gas. The dealer says that because I am at high altitude that I do not need to burn premium gas. Is that correct? I live in NM at 5000+ feet above sea...

I'd use the mid grade to be safe, you'll probably get better mileage w/premium but save that for long/hwy trips. Around town mid grade should be adequate unless you hear "pinging"

2007 kia rondo seems to use alot of gas

I have the same issue of low gas mileage. My 2008 Kia Rondo with V6 (2.7Lt) gets 20-21 mpg in average. Even for highway mileage, it is around 21-22mpg. Very poor gas mileage. Disappointed. I hope it would improve in the future.

Gas milage seems to have dropped.

26 from 28 can be as simple as low air pressure in the tires and outside air temp changes.

Poor gas milage

Not sure where you live but if the gas you get has a higher amount of ethanol in it you will get worse gas milage. But there are many reasons that effect gas millage.

Gas Consumption

If you have the RT with the 5.7 hemi as stated I do not beleive you ever got 27 to 29 miles to the gallon. the best that car will do is 24 - 25 miles to the gallon and that is on a pefectly flat and straight road at about 60 miles an hour. As fas as the MDS the best way to tell (if you can't feel it change) is to use a tool such as the dashawk that monitors the engine stats. I disabled the MDS for several reasons and really so little to no change in gas milage. I do not beleive the MDS helps as much as people would like to think. I have added a lot of mods to my hemi, but still think that 14 - 18 mpg under normal driveing is good for this car
