If the problem is different length bolts then look at the thickness of the flange at each bolt hole. Thicker gets longer and thinner gets shorter. hope this helps. Chris

Anyone know where the different length bellhousing bolts go on a 1998 expedition?


Hi James, you may be able to get a copy of the diagram for the bell-housing unit along with the bolt sizes from the parts counterman at your local Ford dealership...tell him the dilemma your in, I'm sure he'll help you out.by making a print-out of the shop manual specific to your vehicle.
Otherwise, by the trial and error method, you can take each bolt and place them in one hole at a time (finger tight) and measure out the the distance between the exposed bolt thread (gap) and the head of the bolt; then measure the thickness of the bolt ears of the bell-housing frame...it may not be an exact science, but then again, you may get lucky.

Removal of 1990 gmc serra 4x4 transmission


with the assumption its an automatic the following applies(if a manual youll need to remove the slave cylinder from the transmission, its located above the starter) 1.Disconnect the battery and place truck on jackstands if needed for clearance and remove the starter 2. Remove front and rear drivelines as well as speedo sender and and shift linkage (remove shift lever if manual and transfer case shift linkage if not push button, you should be able to just seperate the linkage from the ****** and transfer case and leave the linkage dangling) and any other electrical connections to ****** and transfer case (such as push button transfer case, and electronic automatic trannies) make sure to scribe a line or mark the drivelines in relationship to the yokes so they get installed in the same position for balance 3. Remove transfer case, this will take some of the weight off and make moving the ****** around much easier on you 4. Beggining with the top bellhousing bolt remove all but the bottom two bellhousing bolts (save those for later, one on each side) 5. youre going to need a helper for the next part unless you have a transmission cradle for your floor jack support the transmission with a floor jack remove the crossmember bolts from the frame or completely remove the crossmember from the equation,, either way works 6. remove the two bottom bellhousing bolts from earlier, the transmission is now free, you will have to wiggle it around some and **** it as sometimes the splines on the torque converter bind up, sometimes in low clearance applications you need to support the motor with hoist, remove the motor mounts and drop the motor slightly to get a better angle. sometimes the ****** will pop right off and sometimes you have to fight it a bit but thats the way it goes, just remember the ****** is heavy so be carefull if not useing a ****** cradle! hope this helps out, good luck. also i recomend buy a chilton service manual for any do it yourselfers, its only about 15 bucks and covers alot of stuff, such as removing the ******.

Replaced the transmission now im not getting spark from my plug wires


It's the crankshaft positioning sensor, beleive it or not others have had same problem!Since the transmission was removed and replaced. The sensor is located on the bellhousing. It has two bolts that hold it on the upper trans.bellhouse and a pigtail that connects to the ECM. The sensor actually reads the flywheel revolutions,any grease,oil or just plain misalinement of the sensor and you won't get a spark. One other sugestion is a short in the pigtal of the Ignition Coil. I've come across that too!

Instructions on how to change out a transmission


You'll need to remove the starter, the inspection cover, remove the three bolts going thru the flywheel into the torque converter. Disconnect the driveshaft, support the transmission and remove the transmission mount and crossmember. Disconnect the downshift linkage, any electrical plugs, transmission cooling lines and the shifter linkage. Lower the transmission to get access to the 6 bellhousing bolts, becareful that you don't lower it too far, because of the distributor at the back of the engine. Remove the 6 bellhousing bolts and it should be ready to come out.

Go to pull starter out of engine but cant find it, I know, Im an idoit. please help


On passenger side point towards trans, next to engine block above oil pan. Has 2 bolts that screw into trans bell housing. hope this help.

It should work for you as long as there both 4L60E transmission, but take not there were a few changes to the transmission case and everything internal are the same. The key distinction of the Later 4L60-E (1997-2006) from the Early 4L60-E (1992-1997) or 4L60 (1990-1992) or 700R4 (1982-1989) is the six-bolt "hex" rear output or tailhousing / adapter pattern. The previous versions featured a four-bolt square bolt pattern at the adapter or tailhousing. Additionally, the removeable bellhousing is also another distinguishing feature. The Late 4L60-E transmission has a three piece case of cast aluminum alloy; bellhousing, main case, and tailhousing. GM shortened the package to 21.9" long - equivalent to a manual transmission of 15.4". Good luck and you should not have any problems swapping out the transmission.

have a shop do it? but if you absolutely need to do it yourself.

lift vehicle at least 30 inches off the ground and remove front wheels. detach balljoints and use engine support system to ensure engine does not change position. it will be necessary to use a system that is positioned over the engine rather than under.

remove the subframe from beneith the car. it should have 4 bolts and some minor brackets connecting it to the transmission.

remove electrical and linkage connections from transmission.

remove half axles

remove lower bellhousing cover. disconnect torque convert to flywheel bolts.

remove bellhousing bolts while transmission is supported and seperate from engine.

to install reverse proceedure.

if these directions are not sufficient for you then i would recommend spending the 20 bucks on a manual you cheap skate.

Replace starter


Your Starter is located on the bellhousing of the, or going into, transsmision (this is the part of the transmission that connects to the engine). The starter is mounted, either to the engine or bellhousing, by 2-3 bolts. You will have one RED cable (Positive) attached to the rear of the starter. This cable needs to be removed and it is a good idea to hang on to the hardware just incase the new one doesnt have any. You are not likely to find a black (Negitive/Ground) wire attached to the starter as it finds its ground through the Engine/Transmission, but if you do this is a redundent ground, remove it also. Remove the afformentioned 2-3 bolts that mount the starter, and remove the starter. Place the new starter in and place your mounting bolts back in. Reattache your wires and you are ready to start it!

Replacing a transmission in a 1995 talon non turbo


Manual transmission? If we're talking about a neon MT in your 2gnt, what you need to do is take off the bellhousing on both transmissions. put your bellhousing on the neon tranny. also swap your vehicle speed sensor and reverse light switch onto the neon trans. you shouldn't need to mess with any wiring.
