Could be you put fuel filter on backwards, crossed the spark plug wires.
Check these things first, then check for spark, then check to see if you have fuel, and fuel pressure
Just hope it didn't jump the timing chain or broke it.
Check these things and if not let me know and I will walk you though a couple more things.
Did you replace cap and rotor, check to make sure they are good to

Fuel filter installed backwards ?? Its like a light bulb, turn clockwise to install and tighten, counter-clockwise to loosen and remove. To say "...you put fuel filter on backwards..." is a very good clue Midnight_12 has never replaced, let alone know what a fuel filter looks like !! Beware !! there are shop mechancs here on Fixya who wants to steer you wrong, so you spend $$$$ and call on their service instead. My personal motto; I rather be poor and honest than to be rich from cheating people. I've been fired from dealership shops because I told the customer they were billed for parts and services that were never performed.

Fuel filter is a paper element. As it fills up with contaminants, it creates restriction of fuel pressure. So even if you put it backwards, it will continue to do its job of filtering the fuel. It doesn't have a check valve to let fuel flow one way only. Take your old dirty fuel filter, cut it in half with a hacksaw, and see for yourself I'm telling the truth.

  • Midnite12 Mar 22, 2014

yes you can put fuel filters on backwards, almost all them snap into the fuel line with clips, and most have a arrow pointing towards the engine, some have one way valves, check valves, it does not create a restriction for fuel pressure ! even the old one that are right on the carb, if you put it backward would not give it gas ! so what you are saying all fuel filters look like oil filters, that\'s mostly diesel !

Coolant temperature sensor controls the fuel metering. When one fails the engine is slow to start at first and there is a strong odor of gasoline. Turn it off and it starts right up. As the problem gets worse the engine may fail to start.

As it cranks, is there white or black exhaust smoke ?? If yes, the fuel injectors have solid build up on the tips. Normally, a quart bottle of injector cleaner treats 20 gallons. Pour 5 to 7 quarts of fuel injector cleaner. With cold engine (been parked for at least an hour or overnight), while cranking engine, have 2nd person spray starting fluid into air filter. DO NOT PRESS ON GAS PEDAL !!! Let the starting fluid do its job of starting the car. Starting fluid is highly combustible, so its important you don't give any gas while its cranking and 2nd person is spraying into air filter. When engine starts, stop spraying starting fluid and give a little gas. If engine begins to die, immediately spray a little starting fluid again. When engine begins to run, let it run a few minutes to let fuel injector cleaner to do its job (loosen solid carbon build up on tips of fuel injectors).

Whatever you do, do not try this ! Spraying starting fluid can cause more damage. plus if you don't hold the gas pedal down when cranking the engine on a no start, all you are doing is flooding the engine, when pressing the gas pedal down all the way cuts the fuel off ! Tony you have no clue what you are talking about ! I have read many of your post, all are not the right way to fix or to help try to find what is wrong ! please do not try this what Tony says

Giving it gas while spraying starting fluid will saturate the spark plugs. If you can smell gasoline fumes, the spark plugs are wet and will no longer fire until it dries up (45 minutes to an hour later). NEVER GIVE GAS (step on gas pedal) while spraying starting fluid. You only give some gas AFTER the engine starts up. On diesel engines, yes you hold down the fuel pedal while cranking the engine and simultaneously spraying starting fluid into air intake or air filter, but NOT on gasoline engines, unless you have plenty of free time available to wait for the spark plugs to dry, or you don't mind removing each spark plug and manually drying each gasoline-soaked park plug. If what Midnite12 claims is true, there would be a legal disclaimer written on the starting fluid, so you don't sue them in court because your $1 million dollar Maserati needed an engine overhaul after using starting fluid.

Same thing happened to me at about 140k. It was the fuel pump. Best way to test if your pump is failing and loosing pressure is to see if the car will start immediately after it has been running, or turn the key to the alt position for a few minutes before starting. If your engine fires faster after it has been running or the key has been in the alt position you will probably need a new fuel pump. Great news is with a very deep socket to get the tank straps off its a 30 minute job to replace the pump/filter assembly.

SOURCE: 1995 AUDI 90 CS - Hard to start... spark & fuel OK

Have you tried replacing the starter? I know starters can go bad if the car is not started or run for a long time.

I am getting the same car, with the same issue.. it sat for 2 yrs and won't start.

My mechanic told me it is probably a starter.

1999 audi a6 wont crank sometimes

Either there is a bad or dirty battery connection which is allowing the lights but no crank or you could have dirty or loose starter wires or starter relay may be bad or ignition is a possibility. All these can be tested with an ohmmeter for power. I would start with connections

I have a 98 expedition that starts every time but shuts down everytime too.

When you start it up don't completely release the key from the crank position, let off just enough to stop the starter, if the engine continues to run the ignition switch is defective, a common problem in this year. This is not the lock cylinder but the electrical switch located down at the bottom top of the steering column that the ignition key cylinder actuates via a long steel rod.

Audi 500 refuse to start

There are several things that few people know about starting cars in cold weather. 1. Check your battery to make sure it is not rusted, leaking, and has a charge 2. Jump start your battery with another car, even if you believe the battery is good, this often times will still start your car. 3. If your engine is cold, and you have an older car, ensure to get your fuel lines to the engine flushed or have fuel injection service performed 4. The engine tends to warp the same way wood does during the extreme cold, do not be afraid to continue trying to warm up the engine by constant cranks with it is cold out. Your not going to hurt the car, the worse that could happen is too much fuel will enter the carborator and cause flooding in the system to occur. Wait 20 minutes if this happens and start to crank again 5. Bad spark plugs are a major reason why many cars take a very long time to start 6. Please have your spark plugs removed and exchanged for new ones. Over time, spark plugs become fowled and prevent the car from starting even thou you hear cranking!!!

Re: 2003 audi a6 not cranking when cold

try running lighter weight oil in the winter time, if the oil is too cold the starter will have to work extra hard to turn the engine over and sometimes this will cause fuel problems because the injectors are timed with the engine.

Starter switch. Plastic and cheap, my 98 A6 did the same thing... I replaced thousands in parts, turned out to be a cracked ignition switch which is a very common Audi problem!
