Its probably the tappets..and the lifters that are raised and lowered by the cam shaft. They are worn out? How many miles on this motor??

Citreon xsara just died on me after running with no problems as if its out of fuel trns over but will not fire

check that the cam shaft is turning over as it may be a broken timing belt/chain. Run fault codes to check further.

Timing marks

You need locking pins for both cam shaft pulleys as well as for the crank. The cam pulleys each have a hole in them which line up with a hole in the cylinder head through which an 8mm bolt cam be used to lock them. If you are looking at the cam pulleys from the RH fender side, the LH pulley hole locks at about 5 o'clock and the RH pulley at about 7 o'clock.

The crank locking pin is in an awkward position and a bit difficult to access. the hole is behind the oil filter housing and the pin locks into a hole in the back of the flywheel.

Please note that if your cam belt has snapped this engine will bend valves. If it is a scheduled belt change then it is quite easy to line up the marks and do the belt replacement.

Troubleshooting

there is a problem for sure if you can turn over bottom end of motor and the cam shafts stay stationery. if the cam belt is still in place and has tension it has more than likely stripped the teeth off the belt . and they are a interfearance engine meaning that if the cams stop the valves also stop where they are and more than likely a few have been damaged by being hit b the piston, firstly id be having a good look under those timing covers and taking it from there but doesent sound good at all. hope the info is helpful to your situation.

1990 corolla cranks fine but won't start. What is the troubleshooting process?

check to see if the timing belt is still moving the cams. you should be able to remove a couple of bolts on the top of the timing cover and pull the cover back far enough to see the belt.

You can also look in the oil fill cap, you may be able to see the cam.

you can also remove the distributor cap to see if the rotor is turning.

If the belt is fine than check for spark and fuel pressure.

My bet is the timing belt. Especially if the engine sounds like it is turning over faster than normal.

1984 toyota corolla 1.6 engine. How do i adjust

Carbureted models have a fast idle cam on the throttle,It is a screw that sets against a movable part, called the cam, when the engine heats up,the cam will drop upon tapping the gas pedal.Set the carb, while the engine is cold,by tapping the gas pedal, then adjust the fast idle cam screw by turning it in,with the engine running.Start out by turning the screw in a full turn before starting engine so it will run, then adjust the screw as the engine runs.

Tapping sound could be a worn cam shaft, or a bad valve spring. try adding a bottle of Marvel Mystery oil to free up the spring, since you had the engine apart. Dirt may be the problem. Good luck.
