Question about 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback

Emissions light on

I recently ran low on fuel and after filling the car I forgot to click the gas cap several times. Now the Emission light is on and it wont go off. I tried to fill the tank with gas again, clicked the cap several times, and have also added fuel injector (LUCAS Brand) to the gas tank. But the light is still on. Any suggestions? 2012 Chevrolet Sonic

The computer may have to run a couple of checks on the evap system before the light will go off by itself if you had no issues before all of this you can clear the computer at a shop or disconnect the battery for about 15 seconds and restart and drive the vehicle, if the light comes back on you need to have the vehicle scanned and get the exact trouble code to diagnose the problem, may have just been a coincidence with the light and maybe there is another problem. reply back to me if you need more info hope it helps Darrell

It will turn off given time. You can also have the dealer erase the code if you can't wait.

Been there. Done that. Finally had the fuel pump replaced (on a 2002 Ford Escape).

Best do a fuel pressure test. Should have chg. fuel filter from the get go. The only other filter is on the end of the fuel pump in tank. Bad gas and dirty gas will plug up fuel filter, hense burn pump up.

SOURCE: Full tank of gas and getting low fuel indicator on dash

Bad fuel level sensor. Unfortunately it is located inside the gas tank. Fairly common problem on GM's. Due to sulphur in fuel. Corrodes the sensor tabs. Expensive to have repalced and NOT a do-it-yourself project, unless you have dropped a tank before.

SOURCE: gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

The problem lies in the sending unit in the tank. It could have a wiring problem or the sending unit is bad.

1993 Honda accord, filled my tank and 2 days later the emission light is on.

Check your gas cap. if it is loose, tighten it until it clicks. It is vented, and if the vent is plugged then the computer will throw a code. Check you local auto parts store for a replacement cap - if it is cheap enough, replace the cap. It will usually take a day or two to have that light go off.

Try disconnecting the Battery for 10 minutes or take it to an Autozone, Oreilys, Advance autoparts for a free computer wipe.

Okay, now for the bad news. If the gas cap solution does not work, you have an opening in the Emissions system somewhere.

There is a machine and process called a "smoke test". The special machine hooks up to your gas cap opening and forces a type of tracer smoke into the system. The leak will let the smoke out.

You could have a hole in the gas tank, or Emission lines. Many times an Emission hose will get caught when the vehicle is put on a service lift. If your problem happened after the vehicle had new tires put on it, or any type or work requiring the car to be raised off the floor, the hoist could have nicked a low hanging line.

Engine problem related to fuel refill

Evaporative emission
The Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) is used to prevent gasoline vapors from escaping into the atmosphere from the fuel tank and fuel system. The EVAP system usually requires no maintenance, but faults can turn on the Check Engine light and prevent a vehicle from passing an OBD II plug-in emissions test.
EVAP Evaporative Emission Control System - AA1Car.com Is the check engine light on ? Do you have problems with gas pump shutting off while pumping gas. When the pump shuts off the first time do stop fueling or top off the tank ? Overloading the charcoal canister > Stuck open purge valve .

In the solution for the po440 code on the 2001 toyota camry ce, what's a filler cap?

The filler cap is the GAS CAP. This code will come on if you forgot to tighten ( or drove around with it hanging) your gas cap after filling up the gas tank. If this is the case then all you have to do is tighten the gas cap until 3 clicks are heard. The code will reset itself after several days of driving. If the code does not reset then you may have a defective gas cap or another leak in the fuel emission system.

99% of the time the code is caused by a gas cap that was not tightened properly.

here are more details for P0440

I have honda odyssey and the service engin coms on and the cod is p1456 so ineed to figur out thanks.

This probably means:
  • P1456: Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Tank System)
  • Usually this is because your gas cap was not fully tightened. Be sure to turn it until you hear a click.
  • After you tighten the cap, it might take a couple days of driving before the light goes-out.
  • Be careful to tighten your gas cap regularly, because otherwise it puts a heavy strain on your emission system.

I have a 2004 freestar, i almost ran out of gas but made it to the gas station before this happend. but now my emission control light is on and when i am at a stop light of idle ti sputters and acts like...

Make sure the filler cap is tight. I have two thoughts: 1) that the emission light is entirely coincidental and that the Vent valve on the fuel vapour emission carbon cylinder is being left open allowing un-metered air into the inlet manifold making the intake mix too lean. 2) That when the fuel got low some dirt at the bottom of the tanks was sucked up into the fuel line with the result that either a) the uptake sock in the tank or b) the fuel filter is clogged preventing enough reaching the engine on each injection cycle. To test for 1) close off or crimp the line from the carbon filled cylinder to the inlet manifold. I fthis provides respite fromt the problem, change the vent valve. To test for 2) disconnect the low voltage to the coils (we do not want any spark) using an old towel (to catch the spill) disconnect the fuel line slightly from the fuel rail on the COLD engine. The fuel should spurt out under considerable pressure and with volume; even with the ignition switch is as position 2 (position 3 'ignition' is not needed for this test). Any suggestion that the flow is slow I would change the fuel filter. If the fault is not resolved after the above steps I would suggest you have the codes from the on board diagnostics read

P0457 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (fuel cap loose/off)
P0458 Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Low
P0459 Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit High

At least the cap isn't loose for the gas tank.

I would clear the code with an OBD-II Scanner 'erase code' button, and see how long it takes for it to come back.

My emisson control system light came on after I put in a few gallons of gas, this happened once before and I was told it was the fuel. Should I be concerned or will the light go off. I have a 600 mi

The gas cap is considered part of the emission service and most times a light right after filling the tank is an indication that the gas wasn't replaced tightly. I'd check the gas cap prior to investigating further.
