SOURCE: 1995 Grand Am idles rough
sound very much like you have an air leak problem and even a seal problem to on the intake manifold and injector seals may be leaking same happend to me on my car and i found i had to strip it all again to sort it out .
the injector seals if they are not sitting right or just a slight spec of dirt there you have a problem.
air leaks to see if you do have one use wd40 can spray on the manifold and if the engine picks up you have a leak ok
i hope this helps
let me know how you go on thanks

SOURCE: searches for idle in closed loop
This could be many things. I had somewhat of a similar problem. Here are a few possiblilites though i wouldn't know unless i knew more. Before i do that though. If you press on gas while in neutral will the rpm drop WAY down and then possibly stall out?
Fuel Injectors might be going bad(least likely but possible)
Your idle valve might be off
Timing might be off because of above.
Like i said i don't know exactally and i'm not THAT great and only someone who looks at it and stuff would know but i had somewhat similar problems. If you'd like to explain more email me email@example.com. Just add in your car and firebird or something in the subject. Hope it helps.

how about putting the van in drive with one foot down hard on the brake and rev the engine, does it smooth out now? if it smooths out, i would pull the air cleaner tube to the throttle body and spray the throttle body with carb cleaner, be careful if using the red tube, I have had it blow off before into the intake, not good, open the accelerator and spray it out really good, it will to start until all the cleaner clears out.
