If the engine is identical to the original specification simply by disconnecting the negative lead from the battery for in excess of 10 minutes then reconnecting and taking for a drive the computer will reset to your drive pattern.

I would think so. If you go so far as to change the engine the computer would need to be re-set to match that engine. Remember, when you get the car initially the engine is programed to the car's computer settings. But I'm sure that if you take it somewhere professional (anywere like Nissan, or Sears Automotive, or any auto car repair/maintenance) they will know to do that when they change the engine.

Have 2003 Kia Sorento EX, sat for couple months, then changed batter to pass emission test. Test said not ready due to computer needs to be reset, how far do I have to drive to reset computer?

I think you mean drive cycle not complete.
Generally the van needs to be driven 50-100 miles at both city and highway speeds. The distance needs to start when the engine is at operating temp, and the speed needs to vary including stop and go city. It does not have to be all in one trip but the engine must be warmed up first.

Removed battery while replacing thermostat in my Lexus RX 330. After completion I started engine to find that my check engine light was on along with my VSC and Trac Off. Engine is also not idling...

Most vehicles now-a-days come equip with an on board computer. This computer stores and records several statistics about the operation, condition, and overall health of the vehicle. When you remove the battery, this computer is reset. The results can be a loss of oil level records (when it was changed, when it needs to be changed) tire pressure defaults, etc. In addition, as the vehicle is driven, the computer makes adjustments to things like fuel injection on the engine and other active tasks to improve mileage or performance.

When you reset the computer, it reset all the data along with it. This may cause the check engine light to come on as the car no longer knows the status of certain frequently changed or replaced parts. Your traction was probably turned off either as a response to this or because it was the default for the vehicle; seek out the manual for your vehicle and it should tell you how to re-enable this feature. Lastly, the idle may seem rough because you reset the computer and it no longer provides a tailored level of fuel injection. Over time, this issue should resolve its self as the computer learns.

Check engine light is on but it needed an oil change and i got one but the light hasnt gone off, how do i reset it?

The check engine light does not refer to oil changes, this is for emmision and fuel management as well as a diagnostic tool for other engine components. The only wasy to clear this is to have the dealer clear them or repair what ever is causing the light. It will however clear it self after about 20 times of starting the car and the computer not seing any more bad scans from what ever caused the light to come on in the first place. You can have Auto Zone pull the codes from your car and tell you what caused the light to come on in the first place. To clear the aoil change light turn the key on and press the gas pedal 3 times all the way to the floor without the engine running.

Why does the change oil light soon keep coming on.

It comes on when the computer recognizes that you need a oil change. In older models, they tend to come on for no reason. If the oil is good and you know it doesn't need changed, don't worry about it. A oil changed is recommended at 3000 miles, but I have always went 5000. You car has a sensor that recognizes the oil command. You might be able to get rid of it by taking off the hot side post of the battery. If your not worried and you know the oil is ok, I wouldn't worry about it. Make sure the cap is on tight though. If you have anymore questions, please let me know. I am here to help. How to Reset the Change Oil Light

After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset.

With the ignition key to ON, push the RESET button

located in the driver's side instrument panel fuse block. The

CHANGE OIL light will start to flash, press and hold the

RESET button again. The reset is complete when you hear
the chimes sound and the CHANGE OIL light goes out.

How do i reset the oil life on a 2005 gmc c8500

Most often you need a code reader with a reset function that can connect to the computer jack under the dash and reset factory functions like that. Pain in the tush if you are changing your own oil. Mechanics and dealers have the equipment to do that reset.

Need help

I had the same problem I believe.....
Changed the spark plugs and at the same time I changed the oil & Filters, (Oil & air ). You may not need to change the air fliter, But mine needed it. With the step buttons on the overhead, I could not find any reset. (my check engine light staied on) I'm no Darn Computer geek & frustrated easly by them. LOL ....So I disconected the battery cable, ( waited 15 to 20 sec) then reconnected the cable and this resets the computer. No more worning signs.
You may just need to change the oil & filter and reset the cp. Hope this helps
