Question about Dodge Neon

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Dodge Stratus 3.0 V6. It has started giving me problems starting. If I hold the ignition switch it will eventually turn enough times and start. I have had to get it jumped a couple times after driving it for an hour, turning in off for aprox 10-15 mins and trying to restart it. I have taken it to Autozone and they said my battery and alternator checked fine. Any suggestions?

Could be the starter or the ignition.

SOURCE: 2002 Ford Escape V6 XLT, problem w/ initial start in cold weather

Does the engine crank but just not start? Or... are you cycling the ignition switch without trying to crank the engine? Based on the information you have given, I would first guess that the fuel pump may be going out. I say this because when you first turn the key on the pump primes the engine with pressurized fuel. If the pump is getting old, it may take a few power cycles to get it going. You can test this theory by having somebody listen near the rear of the car while you turn the key on for the first time. The fuel pump make a faint, yet distinctive high pitch noise that can be heard when you turn the key on. Try that first. Next thing you would try is checking the relays for proper function... starting with the fuel pump relay. Good luck.

My car wont start, no turn over, all of the electronics work fine. I hear the fuel pump working. What could it be? I parked went in a store, came out and it just wouldn't start.

Possible defective starter motor. Try tapping on starter motor with a blunt object ( if accessible ) while holding the key in the crank position. If the engine starts, the starter motor is bad. If it doesn't, you will have to check for start power at the starter directly. Possible starter motor/starter relay/ wiring/ignition switch etc

Have you had the ignition switch changed? If the ignition switch is faulty you can have issues getting the car to turn over. Also when driving the car can just shut off. The contacts in the ignition switch just wear out over time. It's a good place to start looking.
