1982 JEEP HESITATES WHILE DRIVING AND DIES

I JUST BOUGHT 1982 CHEROKEE. HAS INLINE 6 PREVIOUS OWNER HAD NEW CARB, FUEL PUMP, FILTER,INSTALLED. IT CAME WITH NO AIR CLEANER AND NO FILTER. SO SOME HOSES ARE DISCONNECTED AND OR PLUG, CAPPED OFF. ENGINE STARTS AND SEEMS TO IDLE PRETTY GOOD. BUT WHILE DRIVING MAJOR HESITATION AND STALLING OCCURS. POSSIBLY THE WARMER THE ENGINE IS, IT SEEMS WORSE?.MAYBE!! COULD CLOG CAT CONVERTER CAUSE THIS? AND OR?? I HAVE LOOKED OVER ENTIRE MOTOR LOCATING DISCONNECTED HOSES AND WIRES. IM GOING TO RESEARCH THROUGH MECH BOOK AND TRY TO FIND HOMES FOR THESE WIRES AND HOSES. WITH NO AIR CLEANER I KINDA ONLY GONNA GET SO FAR. MY MAIN ? IS WHY IT IDLES AND SOUNDS GREAT UP TO ABOUT 2000 RPMS THEN CUTS OUT AS IF WERE RUNNING OUT OF FUEL. PLEASE IF ANY SIMPLE OR BASIC INFO IS AVAILABLE I WOULD GREATLY APRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS. THANKS SO MUCH.

2 things. come to mind.
i check the distributor advance works to spec with my timing light (strobe)
if that is ok, its a carb issue.

carbs fail for many reasons, (mostly gummed up inside)
we clean them. that fixes them. (with a kit)
I only have this for symptoms, and is not good.
MAJOR HESITATION AND STALLING OCCURS
does the engine have full power up any hill wide open throttle
is the Hesitation only a short time then catches up.
The carb (not stated P/N or brand) has jets, the if gummed up
will cause lean running.
so will any power valve jet.
ever tune it up. new spark pats, rotor all the way to spark plugs.
bad spark , loves to fail under load, that is its , magic.
carb>

  1. low float bowl levels.
  2. low fuel pressure causing above,
  3. bad float valve , sticks closed and starts bowl of fuel, causing #1
  4. Gummed up jets.
  5. Gummed up emulsion tubes in carb body.
  6. Choke stuck on, causing flooding,
  7. Choke dead causing hard starts . (stuck open)
  8. power valve clogged.
  9. Highspeed accelerator pump bad, causing only sight hesitation.

my guess? based on 1 word "stall" its #1 to 3 or 6.
black spark plug tips would be #6

or if black sparks, the float valve is stuck open flooding engine and stalling.

we can go for days on carbs. but will not.

SOURCE: 95 toyota 4runner running bad. can not figure it out.

Check the timing and compression of the engine. It sounds like you either have a blown head gasket or a the timing jumped.

SOURCE: hesitates on acceleration

Does the car always hesitate during acceleration? If it ALWAYS struggles when it starts or ALWAYS hesitates on acceleration then I would say the issue is fuel delivery. If the problems are more intermittent and come-and-go then it could be an electrical issue.

I would start by changing the fuel filter. Changing plugs, wires, cap, and rotor are all good things to do as your budget will allow. I doubt you will have to change your injectors.

If you end up replacing any rubber fuel line, be sure to use the high-pressure stuff made for use on fuel injected cars.

I hope this helps! -Nick

There is no inline fuel filter, this is true of most every manufacturers vehicles. There is a fine mesh nylon sock at the inlet to the fuel pump.

1995 Jeep grand cherokee dies when given gas

You'll need to check the fuel pressure w/ a gauge you can get at most auto parts stores. Not sure what it should be for your SUV but probably in the 40 psi to 60 psi. It should also hold that pressure when shut off. If you do replace the fuel pump, strongly recommend that you use an OEM part as aftermarket ones while cheaper tend to have a short life.

Engine dies during drive and wont start up

Check the in line fuel filters. Dirt and debris can clog the filter under vacuum pressure from fuel pump and starve the engine. After the car sits and the vacuum is released, the debris falls away from the filter allowing the fuel to pass thru the filter until it clogs up once again. There are also in tank filters but more than likely the culprit is the inline. They are pretty inexpensive and easy to fix.
