Question about 1998 Chevrolet Blazer

1 Answer

I have a 2002 4WD Blazer. I just replaced tthe head gaskets and now have a bad coolant lea, Fuel leak, and it wont turn over

Long story short, this is my first venture into the mechanic world, I know big task for a green pea.... But im a single mom and have to get home to my kids.My freeze plugs blew and after two days of swimming in the mud under this Blazer I was finally done.... only to realize the head gaskets were blown. 2 WEEKS later I think I finally have it put together and coolant is leaking out as fast as I can put it in from the front passenger side of the block, best I can tell without tearing it back apart. And When the fuel pump comes on I can smell Fuel without turning it over, which it wont do anyway. Please Help. My kids need there mamma. thank you and God Bless.

When i had the water pump replaced the man told me the intake gasket was leaking.. I paid someone to fix it and the following day it froze and it wasnt til then that I found out that he didnt even put antifreeze in. i was froze up and found a freeze plug on the ground. All of this has been done in my friends driveway. I had some help for a couple days. Tired beat up and not sure what to do next. I had never even changed my own oil before this. I thank God for the strength but Im sure ready to get home. I was just reading about the water pump weep hole leak and it is in that general area.

Unfortunately it sounds like the head gasket/s were not torqued down correctly with new stretch bolts. Sorry but it requires stripping down again and sorting out.

Testimonial: "I did not seal the water pump correctly. Still a long ways from done. Its a mess to say the least. Missing bolts and mystery brackets from the two days i had help. I have spent all day trying to find what 2 bolts sizes for the egr. And now im worried about the fuel line because when I FINALLY got the bracket secured by the fire wall on drivers side it didnt line up anywhere else and i pulled and pushed until i got it hooked... i aplaud yal for what you do. I thought my super mom instinct could get me through this if i researched and worked hard. But i feel a million miles away. Thank you for your help."

mmmmmmmm they are really hard to replace but most likelly is goin to be a intake gasket, i do recomend you to call arrown the auto repairs and ask for a pressure test to the cooling system
this test is not that expensive and will tell you exactly where is the leak coming from, but on this type of vehicles i badly see a freeze plug leaking.

SOURCE: Leaking fluid in my 1999 Chevy Malibu

When they changed the water pump and the leak stopped then the water pump was bad. If they changed the water pump and was still leaking then then it was not the water pump.
Where is the fluid leaking from, if there is white smoke coming from the tail pipe then good chance is that the head gasket is gone and pull the dip stick out to see if there is antifreeze mixxing with the engine oil.
It's common that the 3.4 V6 has intake manifold gasket go bad and leak. Check all the heater hose first, and try to find out where the leak is coming from.
Good luck and keep me posted, glad to help you as much as i can.

SOURCE: 92 Chevy Astro-leaking freeze plug behind motor mount

there are a couple of ways to fix the problem. first you can use pepper to plug the hole if it is a small leak. If it isn't, then use radiator stop leak. You can find this at a parts store

SOURCE: I keep having to refill my coolant tank what do i need to do

There is a small hole under the extension behind where the pulley is mounted, most times barely visible. If you see any coolant there the pump seal is leaking. Many times it will show up better with the cap off, as internal pressure can sometimes push the seal against the shaft and temporarily stop the leak. If any coolant is found there,(sometimes it will run down the lower hose and appear like a bad hose or clamp) the pump needs to be changed. No, it is in no way related to a manifold gasket leak.

If the coolant is in the cab they did not cause the problem changing the manifold gasket. It sounds like the heater core has failed, which is under the dash.

At startup engine runs rough with a white smoke out of exaust with a sulfur smell. . stops after tthe engine reaches op temp.

On a vehicle that old, especially with high mileage, the symptoms you describe are fairly typical of a failing head gasket. When head gaskets begin to fail, they will allow water to drip into one or more cylinders, which will burn off as steam when the car is first started. Check to see if you are losing any coolant, however small the amount.
If the vehicle has recently been allowed to overheat, near 100% probability that you will need to have the head gasket replaced.
If by "sulfur smell," you mean a smell of raw gasoline, the problem can also be a sticky startup injector... but less likely than the chance of a bad head gasket.

Recent head gasket repair. leaking coolant and fuel

Sounds like one of 3 things.... (none are good)

Someone made a mistake on a freeze plug and thats the leak.

The water pump wasn't installed properly, leaking from the base.

The block is cracked near the water pump.

As for the smell of fuel..... something was not re-installed properly and you have a fuel leak.

Sorry this was not a solution as much as it was bad news.

Head gasket or lower intake gasket on 98 Blazer

this does sound like a head problem (hopefully just the gasket). pulling the head with the exhaust manifold attached is possible but tricky and difficult. risking the bolt and drilling it out if it snaps would be alot easier. I would strongly suggest having the head checked while its off (so you dont rebuild to find that you wasted time and money on a bad head)

Replace intake manifold gasket; 4.3L V-6

do you have a coolant leak or oil leak. ive always discarded the rubber gaskets provided in gasket kit, and instead, ran a good thick bead of silicone. The rubber gaskets, ive found, can be pushed out, either when setting intake on engine, or if the engine has a bad pcv valve, pressure within block can blow them out. make sure and check pcv valve. after the new intake gaskets are placed on the head, dab a bit more on the 4 corner nubs of the gaskets. i like to use an anearobic sealer around the coolant ports, just thin layer on both sides of gasket. hope this helps. Coolant loss no leak

hi.

Check compression. If the leak is internal, then the most common cause is the head gasket. Water (or coolant) leaks internally through the worn head gasket reaching the cylinders where it gets vaporized. Symptoms are coolant fluid level going down, bad performance, loss of compression, overheating, white smoke because of vaporized coolant from exhaust, traces of fuel in coolant reservoir etc.

If head gasket is Ok and there is no overheating, then the leak is external. Check pump, radiator and coolant lines.

Regards.

Ginko.

Overheating

OVERHEATING CAN BE CAUSE BY MANY THINGS LIKE FAULTY THERMOSTAT AND FAULTY RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP,TOO MUCH WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM NEED 50 / 50 WATER AND ANTIFREEZE.LOOK FOR WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAK, IF COOLANT LEAKING OUT WEEP HOLE WATER PUMP BAD NEED REPLACING.CHECK FOR LOW COOLANT LEVEL, YOUR RADIATOR OVERFLOW JUG SHOULD HAVE COOLANT AT THE FULL COLD MARK IF NOT KEEP ADDING COOLANT INTO COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG UNTIL COOLANT STOP DROPPING AND FULL COLD MARK, IF OVERFLOW COOLANT JUG WAS EMPTY RADIATOR IS LOW ON COOLANT.WHICH CAUSE AIR IN COOLANT SYSTEM KEEPING THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FROM BEING SUBMERGE IN HOT COOLANT WHICH TURN ON THE COOLANT FANS.WHEN ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GET CERTAIN SET TEMPERATURE LIKE 190 DEGREES THE PCM AND COOLANT SENSOR WILL TURN ON COOLANT FANS, IF VECHICLE OVERHEATING COOLANT FANS NOT WORKING EITHER YOU HAVE FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CHECK COOLANT FANS FUSE AND RELAYS. YOU CAN CODE SCAN CAR TO SEE IF YOU HAVE FAULTY PCM, FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULTY COOLANT FAN RELAY.IF COOLANT FAN AND ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OKAY,YOU HAVE CORRECT COOLANT LEVEL IN COOLANT SYSTEM, THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP BEEN REPLACED, YOU COULD HAVE BLOWN HEAD GASKET CHECK ENGINE OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK SHAKE HEAD GASKET BLOWED ALSO WHEN HEAD GASKET BLOWED YOU CAN DRIVE CAR SHORT DISTANCE START OVERHEATING AND YOU LOOSE ENGINE POWER SUSPECT BLOWED HEAD GASKET.

white smoke is caused by coolant mixing into your combustion camber which is burning through your exhaust. More than likely a leaking head gasket is at fault

Coolant problem

Overheat could be a pulged up rad , but low on coolant ? it has to go somewhere. If you don't see any leaks , I am afraid that your head gasket might be leaking it into a combustion chamber.
Do you seem to have steam / vapour coming out of exhaust pipe more than usual ?
Hope that's not the problem , good luck
