What causes my gear shift to lock in park


Manufacturers have designed the shifters to lock in the Park position. This is to prevent children from accidentally moving the shifter out of Park if they are playing behind the wheel (as they should not be of course). The ignition must be in the ON position, with the brake pedal pressed, to release the shifter from PARK. If there is a malfunction, most cars have a bypass release button hidden near the shifter. Check your owners manual for details if needed.

Why cant I put car in gear


Most automatic transmission cars/trucks have a solenoid lock on the shifter that requires the brake pedal to be depressed in order to move the shifter out of park. This prevents a child from accidentally knocking the car into gear if the parent is out of the car and the child is inside but not yet restrained. If the solenoid fails the shifter will not move. Most vehicles have a manual override to release the shifter (in case of battery dying, for example). Check the owners manual to see if and where the release button is.

Gear shift Selector stuck


These were known for having faulty brake light switche that would cause that problem as well as cruise control inop. I would check that first. It operates the shift-lock solenoid which releases the shifter. There were also some problems with the ignition switches, but mostly on the gm cars.

P0740 Honda - Transmission Lock-Up Control System Fault Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness is open or shorted
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection

Tech notes
On some Honda vehicles the P0740 code may be set by an overheating torque converter problem which is caused by an insufficient flow to the torque converter release circuit.

P0740 Honda Description
The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.
Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.
When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

Lever blocked on P


Disconnect cable at gear box end & try to move. If lever moves fault at g.b if still stuck strip lever & check cable etc

My car( 2001 Grand Prix...) the shifter in it want pull into gear now has to push the release button on the side what has caused this and will it hurt to drive it like this.


Hi, there is no problem driving it like this, but you might want to make sure your brake lights are working. The problem has to do with the shift lock. There is a solenoid at the base of the shifter that unlocks it when you step on the brake. The failure to unlock the shifter may be caused by a burned fuse, a failed brake switch, or a failed shift lock solenoid. I always check the brake lights first, as this may indicate the problem is in the brake switch above the pedal.

Hi,
You have a park position switch on the transmission lever which sounds like it is loose or faulty. It could also be the shift lock solenoid itself also, or the relay which helps to disengage it may be faulty.
Check these 3 components and let me know if you need more information.

Can not get transmission to release park when shifted into any gear. Car feels like it is in gear and would move if park would release.


replace the shift lock solenoid which is located by the shifter cable inside the car. That solenoid operates as a lock and disengages upon pressing on the brake pedal to shift

1999 Honda Accord EX won't shift out of park. It is stuck. I think it's the shift lock solenoid but I'm not sure. How do I get the car out of park. I pushed the brake in but the button on the gear shifter...


If you press the Break pedal and the shift button does not engage, Your Solenoid did not activate to release it out of park. either the: solenoid is out - Bent levers - Solenoid harness disconnected - Break activation wire may be damaged. this piece is easy to replace as it sits on the right side (passanger side) of the shift lever. remove center console cover to access the soleniod which is held on by two 10mm nuts. and a C- clamp
