Question about Volvo S40

2 Answers

2006 S-40 w/ 28k on it. Took a couple of attempts to start, and when it started, the msg center gave several messages "anti-theft system" and "check engine"; the "I" box is illuminated. No problems with this car at all before this. Just had 30k service two weeks ago.

Car sounds rough; struggles to start. Sounds like not getting juice. These alerts appear in the display: "Alarm system service required" "engine service required" (just had a 38k service 3 weeks ago), "anti-skid temporarily disabled", check engine light on.

At this point the only option here is to return to the dealer and have the system scanned for trouble codes stored in memory of central computer module, there will be codes in memory, without this info u are just guessing and guessing on this car is very expensive. I base this advice on 40 years as a professional car technical work. Also the check engine light means possible emission system problems, this is covered by the extended emission warranty which goes to 70,000 miles on most cars.

Hi there,

Getting the light out is not much of a problem, however you are being told something in the emmissions system has a problem, which could affect mileage and in certain instances can cause damage to other components in the system.

Under your steering column and at the bottom part of the dash, you will see a black connector with numerous holes (pins). The code reader will plug in there.

Go to your local parts store and ask for a GM code reader. These things are pretty cheap these days. Inside the package should be a description of what the codes mean. Just an example would be a code for a bad O2 sensor. You would change the sensor, clear the code and the engine should run properly.

The error codes are general symptoms and can mean many things. If you just try to get the light off, this is only a very temporary fix and it will come right back on until you fix what is setting the light off.

Good Luck
thanks

After completing the 45 minute relearn procedure for a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix message center Now says system not programmed

Relearn for what ? Anti theft system PK3 ? The relearn procedure is three 10 min. procedures for a total of 30 min.
30-Minute Relearn Procedure
Use this procedure after replacing the following components:
?€¢
The passkey III (PK3) keys

?€¢
The BCM

?€¢
The PCM, see important above

Important: This procedure is not available on vehicles equipped with option code (Z49).
If replacing a BCM with an GM SPO Replacement Part, perform the procedure to setup a new BCM prior to the 30-minute relearn procedure.

  1. With a master passkey III key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the STARTING DISABLED DUE TO THEFT message on the drivers information center (DIC), after approximately 10 minutes the STARTING DISABLED DUE TO THEFT message on the DIC will turn off.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
  5. Important: The vehicle learns the key transponder information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
  6. With a master passkey III key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information and the PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.
  7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

2003 Saturn Vue with a identity anti theft system. Replaced my battery a few months ago. Couple weeks ago noticed a little difficulty starting up. Last week wouldn't start just clicking noise. Jumped...

Anti-theft system has nothing to do with it . Battery cables , maybe , Park neutral safety switch possibly ! With anti-theft system problem you wouldn't a click or anything , that is if the anti-theft disables fuel or the starter . Plus the SECURITY light would be on if it were a anti-theft system problem . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop that knows how to do starter circuit testing >
Starter Voltage Drop
How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit

And what's this identity anti theft system ? No such thing ! The vehicle has a content theft an vehicle theft deterrent system !
This system disables fuel not cranking of the engine. The VCM/PCM will not disable the fuel due to any BCM message for the remainder of the ignition cycle.
If the VCM/PCM does not receive the same password from the BCM as the last learned one, the vehicle will start and then stalls due to the Fuel Lockout.

I have a 2003 Isuzu Axiom and I was in a car accident where the doors on drivers side were hit!! The dome lights stayed on then the battery died we unhooked all the inside lights and gave the battery a...

Start at basics, do not assume that this or that is good, verify with a scanner and/or multi-meter if possible.verify that when attempting to start that anti-theft didn't enable. usually icon of key with lock illuminated or theft light flashing, check and see if headlights dim(amperage draw or load) while attempting to start. this will ensure your problem is not anti-theft. if you have access to an obdII scan tool try and pull diagnostic code(s) if present . Question, how long has it been sitting? does your Transponder have a good battery in it? Try closing all doors and with transponder lock and unlock with transponder. some times replacement of battery with doors open will accidentally enable try to reset security feature.. sounds like this is going to be your problem area

Replaced ignition switch in 1999 chevy cavaliar rs, anti-theft light comes on and stays on and won't allow car to start and remain on or run

You have to do a relearn procedure on the anti-theft system:

Attempt to start the vehicle. Leave the ignition on until the THEFT SYSTEM indicator turns off (about 10 minutes). Turn the ignition switch off. Leave the ignition switch off with key in for about 10 minutes. Attempt to start vehicle.

07 ford focus anti theft light flashes all the time

If the security or anti-theft light is flashing when you attempt to start your car, and the engine does not crank or does not start, you have an anti-theft problem. The system may not be recognizing your key's key-less entry signal, or there may be a fault in the anti-theft module or wiring.
There is a reset procedure to stop this anti-theft light flashing.many a times this helps The reset procedure is as follows:-- Reset the alarm by locking and unlocking the drivers side door.Do this a couple of times and then check it will reset the factory security system . If the reset procedure does not helps then its time to get the anti-theft system checked. There is a short circuit in the anti-theft system wiring. 1997 cadillac deville delagance - anti theft device

I've got a 97 deville d'elegance that has issues similar to these. Last year the red anti-theft light came on and the car wouldn't start-took it to the dealership and they replaced the PCM? (the main brain for the system) for $900...the guy told us the wiring was so corroded he didn't want to mess with it much. Today the message started flashing on the dash that says "anti-theft problem/ car may not restart" but it still turned over in the driveway a couple times so I am hoping I can reset it. The wiring system is jacked and will probably need to replace the wiring harness completely. Doubt its worth it. Not a secure feeling with 2 babies in the back seat in the middle of winter....
