Question about 2004 Ford F150

2004 ford f150 had a sqeek in real universal joint replaced. but it fits loose. put snap rings in and it has a 1/8 gap u can see alittle loose on both ends. ?? what should i do? i check with local ford and said correct one and changed again anyway.

Those are a tight fitting plastic snap in unit...
If they are falling out the CENTER CAPs need to be replaced. To be replaced properly on the vehicle... they need to be aligned... and snapped into place... The popular approach was to hit them on... if they didn't snap in...

How do I fix my F150 Ford from squeaking on the front driver side.


It's your universal joints. Your universal joints have become warn and what's happening is as you accelerate its moving and the loose universal joints are moving which is causing the noise. It occurs at low speeds because of a slight wobble as speed increases the wobble goes away and so does the noise. It's best to change the font and back at the same time you can find them at your local part store starting at $19.99 each. As for your front end lubricate it real good. Hope this was helpful.

Howdo I remove a front universal joint on a 1980 chevy Scottsdale 4x4


take out driveshaft and use a press or vice and a socket to press the caps off the old u joint. the inner or outer snap rings have to be removed first of course. Many GM vehicles don't have snap rings from factory and are held in place with plastic. The plastic will break loose when you press the cups and you will have to use snap rings for the replacement u joint

I replaced the snap ring and retainer because they were both broke and still no luck with overdrive working


Overdrive would not engage at 35+ mph. Took trans pan off, removed filter, dropped valve body out. Found broken snap ring on overdrive servo. Removed and replaced snap ring. Opened valve body and found 1 of the broken pieces stuck in a valve. Replaced all valve body gaskets. Put valve body back in with 95 in/lbs torque. Put in new filter. Pan on with 120 in/lbs or 10 ft/lbs. Refill with trans fluid. Run through gears. Lower vehicle. Test drive.

I can't get u joint out of driveshaft. Please help


You'll want to put it in a vice and heat it up untill the plastic oozes out. Then use a drift to knock out the u-joint one way then pull out the bearing cap and then same thing back the other way.Clean the holes with some emory cloth before installing the new one.

Can i replace bal joint on a ford f150 without puting truck on a lift. I have a jack and a pair of ramps.I dont have money to go to a repair shop so what tools do I need


you need a ball joint press cost about fitfty bucks if it is rusty you will need a set of torches they can be stuborn you will also need large pair of snap ring pliers

- J 9522-5 U Joint Bearing Spacer Remover
Disassembly Procedure
Notice: Never clamp propeller shaft tubing in a vise. Clamping could dent or deform the tube causing an imbalance or unsafe condition. Always
clamp on one of the yokes and support the shaft horizontally. Avoid damaging the slip yoke sealing surface. Nicks may damage the bushing or cut
the lip seal.
1. Support the propeller shaft in a line horizontal with the table of a press.
2. Mark the propeller shaft as to which end is the transmission end and which end goes to the rear axle.
3. Place the universal joint so that the lower ear of the yoke is supported on a 30 mm (1 1/8 inch) socket.
4. In order to shear the plastic retaining ring on the bearing cup, place J 9522-3 on the open horizontal bearing cups. Press the lower bearing cup out
of the yoke ear.
5. If you do not completely remove the bearing cup, lift the cross and insert J 9522-5 between the seal and the bearing cup you are removing.
Continue to press the bearing cup out of the yoke.
6. Rotate the propeller shaft. Press the opposite bearing cup out of the yoke.
7. Mark the orientation of the slip yoke to the tube for proper reassembly.
8. Remove the cross from the yoke.
9. Remove the remaining universal joint parts from the yoke. If you are replacing the front universal joint, remove the bearing cups in the slip yoke
in the same manner.
10. Inspect the retaining ring grooves for plastic.
11. Inspect the bearing cup bores in the yoke ears for burrs or imperfections.
12. Clean the remains of the sheared plastic bearing retainers from the grooves in the yoke.
13. The sheared plastic may prevent the bearing cups from pressing into place and thus prevent the bearing retainers from properly seating.
Assembly Procedure
1. Remove the bearing cups from the universal joint.
2. Assemble 1 bearing cup part way into 1 side of the yoke.
3. Turn the yoke ear toward the bottom.
4. Assemble the cross into the yoke so the trunnion seats freely into the bearing cup.
5. With the trunnion seated in the bearing cup, press the bearing cup into the yoke until the bearing cup is flush with the yoke ear.
6. Assemble the opposite bearing cup part way into the yoke ear.
7. Ensure that the trunnions start straight and true into both bearing cups.
8. Press the opposite bearing cup into the yoke ear while working the cross all the time in order to inspect for a free unbinding movement of the
trunnions in the bearing cups.
Important: If there seems to be a hang-up or binding, stop pressing, and inspect the needle bearings for misalignment in the bearing cup.
9. Press the bearing cup into the yoke until the bearing retainer groove clears the inside of the yoke.
10. Assemble the bearing retainer in the retainer groove.
11. Continue pressing until you can snap both retainers into place.
12. If seating the retainer is difficult, spring the yoke slightly with a firm blow from a dead blow hammer.
13. It may be necessary to lubricate the snap ring with a slight amount of chassis grease so the snap ring seats in the bearing cup groove.

3. Disassemble the snap rings by pinching the ends together with a pair of pliers.
4. If the ring does not readily snap out of the groove in the yoke, tap the end of the cup lightly in order to relieve the pressure from the ring.
5. Place the universal joint so that the lower ear of the yoke is supported on a 30 mm (1-1/8 inch) hex head socket or a 27 mm (1-1/16 inch) socket.
6. Place J 9522-3 on the open horizontal bearing cups. Press the lower bearing cup out of the yoke ear.
7. If you do not completely remove the bearing cup, lift the cross and insert J 9522-5 between the seal and the bearing cup you are removing.
Continue pressing the bearing cup out of the yoke.
8. Rotate the propeller shaft. Press the opposite bearing cup out of the yoke.
9. Mark the orientation of the slip yoke to the tube for proper reassembly.
10. Remove the cross from the yoke.
11. Remove the remaining universal joint parts from the yoke.
12. If you are replacing the front universal joint, remove the bearing cups in the slip yoke in the same manner.
13. Inspect the retaining ring grooves for dirt, corrosion, or pieces of the old ring.
14. Inspect the bearing cup bores for burrs or imperfections.
15. Clean the retaining ring grooves. Corrosion, dirt, rust, or pieces of the old retaining ring may prevent the bearing cups from pressing into place o
prevent the bearing retainers from properly seating.
Assembly Procedure

I have a ford f150, 4 wheel drive that has a load sqeeking sound that sounds like it is coming from the rear end. this sound only comes while the trucks in a forward movement


A sound like this could be caused by anything that is rotating. possibilities include a bad universal joint, worn brake pads, emergency brake shoes, rust build up on brake rotor, a stone caught in between rotor and backing plate, bad axle bearings.
Need to locate area of noise first to diagnose.

Operation: Most universal joints are held in place with a combination of pressed fit with a snap ring and either a bearing plate, bearing strap or a U-bolt. Advice: Most universal joints have two bearing caps pressed into the driveshaft and use a snap ring either on the inside or outside of the bearing cap to hold it in place. Some manufacturers use injected plastic instead of a snap ring. The injected plastic holds the cap in place under normal conditions but will break free when pressure is applied during the removal process. The replacement universal joint will use a snap ring instead of the injected plastic. The other two bearing caps are usually held in place by either a bearing plate, bearing strap or a U-bolt all of which can be removed with a normal ratchet and socket or wrench. Occasionally you will find all four bearing caps using the press fit method. In these cases two of the bearing caps will be pressed into a flange that unbolts from the differential or a slip yoke that slides off of the transmission tail shaft.

i have the same noise to my 2005 ford f-150
i beleive its a frozen bearing in the universal

does your truck also ingage its self into 4 wheel and make a loud noise
only way to stop it is to stop the truck or shift into 4 high on the go
only happens when it wants 3 times a day or not for a week
