Check that the drive belt is in good condition and tensioned properly. check fluid level in reservoir. have a pressure test done on the system to determine it the pump is working.

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy Impala power steering. Replaced pump 3x

Have you replaced the power steering filter? This could be clogged and causing flow problems.

The problem you have is the Harmonic Balancer. When it goes, the drive belt slides. There is a way to check it using a chalk mark on the balancer. Drive and the chalk line will be broken. Means you need a new Harmonic Balancer.

two things: Pressure control solenoid first. Second issue is the valve body. These are common issues, but 9 times out of 10 its just the pressure control solenoid. Power steering, could have a leak, that causes air, which in turn causes noise or yes, a noisy pump.

2001 chevrolet impala hard to turn steering wheel

This is a common problem with the 2001 Impala. The intermediate shaft in the steering needs to be lubricated or replaced. There is also a recall on some Impala's. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm I suggest you take it to a trusted Chevy dealer and have this repaired.

My 2005 Chevy Impala's power stearing problem?

From the sounds of it, that pothole messed up your steering. Something is binding in the steering train, could be a damaged tie rod end, one of the other steering joints, or even the rack and pinion steering itsself. When it's binding, the power steering pump has to work too hard, slowing the engine down, making your lights dim because it's also slowing the alternator(on the same belt drive) and furthering your steering problem. You need to get it checked out immediately before something breaks and gets you into an accident. Remember, if steering linkage breaks, you have NO control of your vehicle, and it doesn't care if you're driving 70 mph on the highway.
