Question about 2003 Audi A4 Cabriolet

1 Answer

Recently had a cambelt change on a 2000 Audi A4 (B5). The engine sounds great, seems smooth but I am convinced there is a slight, but significant, loss of power in the lower range. Accelerating hard from idle it accelerates slower than I remember it and slower than the engine sounds tell me it ought to be. It almost feels like it is lurching until it hits 2000RPM at which point it feels like it used to before belt change (it also gets slightly quieter). If I want to maintain acceleration when changing gear I have to push the gas harder otherwise if it drops into the 1000-2000RPM on gear change it seems to drag briefly, even if this is only for 1/2 sec. This causes problems around town as I can't simply roll into new gears. I find it hard to maintain a consistent gap between me and the car in front and feel like I'm flooring, braking, flooring, braking. This sounds very dramatic but it's not as bad as it sounds - I think there is nothing more than a very subtle loss of power. At higher RPMs it is non-existant. Perhaps it isn't so easy to spot for the person who changed the belts but I do think if I can notice it (only had the car 2 weeks prior to change) I assume something must be up. The best way I can describe it is like driving my previous car - a far heavier Volvo V70 with a 10V engine. I got rid because it was useless for town driving so I'm not keen on being stuck with with this problem. I have had Audis in the past and this is not how an Audi performs. Change was done at Audi dealer.

A6 turbocharged. Whyu does it smoke when it covers a 120km per hour?

I am going to say 'blown turbo'. As I understand it, they needs replacing every few years. They are susceptible to heat and incredible revolutions. They have to be lubricated, the seals go, and you get smoke.

The thermostaton a 2.8L V6 audi a4 is located behind the cambelt on the driver side. To reach in you need to remove the fornt bumper, slide the radiator upport frame forwards (dont disconnect anything) remove the driver side cambelt cover, SLACKEN the cambelt SLIGHTLY (DO NOT REMOVE IT) then you can slide the thermostat housing out from behind the cambelt followed ny the thermostat.

State Emissions Test

Sounds like a failure of the engine coolant temperature sensor, which is a known weakness on the B5 chassis Audi A4 (model years 96-01). The sensor is relatively inexpensive ($20-30) and if you call up ECS Tuning (www.ecstuning.com) or Pure Motorsports (www.purems.com) with your VIN number, they can send you the correct sensor (there are three types, identified by color of the connector - black, blue, or green). Changing it is somewhat of a pain due to its location, but it can be done in 30-40 minutes. You have the 12 valve 2.8 V6 - take a look at www.audidiy.com and www.12v.org (two dedicated Audi sites) - there are a ton of tech procedures on those sites, and you'll likely find what you need there - a detailed, step by step, photo-referenced procedure on how to change the sensor.
