Avoid driving around too much with too much oil!! Not good! Is it time for an oil change? If it is, $19.95 will get this done for you at most quick oil change places...if not, you will need a pan for the excess oil to drip into and a wrench. On my 97 Malibu, the oil pan plug is a 9/16. No need to jack the car...just slide under, loosen the oil pan bolt A LITTLE..too much and it'll ALL pour out! depending on how much excess you think you put in...let that much come out...it will drip slowly...tighten oil pan bolt back up...check dip stick to see where it is now.. ALWAYS DO ANY OF THESE STEPS ON A COOLED MOTOR!! After first time I did an oil change-I never paid to have it done again! It is kinda fun at least knowing how...lol : )

Oil drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan, which is under the engine. a proper sized wrench will remove the oil plug. have a large drain pan ready, (5-6 quarts). You might as well have an oil change done at this time as its just a guess how much oil you remove by quickly re installing the plug while draining. If you do drain just a little oil, keep checking the dip stick to be sure not to add more than needed. Add a 1/4 quart at a time. be sue to tighten the drain plug JUST SNUG.

The car I was asking about the time needed to replace an oil pan gasket is on a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu 3.6L engine V6.

Tywana, First you place an oil catcher, then remove the oil drain nut and let all the oil out. Then you remove all of the little bolts up higher, all the way around the pan. This will be messy, so have some cardboard and paper down. Then you pull off or scrape off the gasket with a plastic (not metal) scrapper. Then you put on a new gasket and put the oil pan back up.

Too much oil in my car

There is a bolt on the bottom of the oil pan that allows the oil to drain out. Take out this bolt until the oil has drained out. From empty put 4-4.5 qts into the engine (on a level surface) then start and let it run for 20-30 sec, then turn off the engine and let it sit for 1 min or more before checking the oil level. The crosshatched area of the dipstick indicates one quart.

Where is the safest spot to place a jack on the bottom of a 6 cyl 97 malibu engine

Typically if you need to raise the engine a little, or adjust it's position with a jack the best and safest way is to use a chunky piece of wood at least the same length as the oil pan and wide enough to rest on the jack saddle as a load spreading member between the jack and oil pan. Never try to support the entire weight of the engine this way, it will most likely deform the oil pan.

Oil in the radiator tank

97-02 Malibu is noted for cracked heads/blocks, bad intake manifold gaskets. This causes oil in radiator and antifreeze in crankcase.
I got another engine from a junkyard, put a complete gasket set in it and when it started losing coolant again a year later, I sold it. Google it and figure out how much you are willing to spend.

How do i change the oil on my 97 catera?

torxbt.jpgYou will need a set of these...but just the smaller ones..thats for the oil drain plug..Now for the oil filter, you may need an oil filter wrench to take it off.Image Not Available

3288.gif,Now before you reverse this procedure, make sure you take some of the new oil, and put it on your seal of the new oil filter, and cleacn the housing area where the oil filter go...Double check the drain plug once you tighten it...Add your oil..double check your oil level...Let the car run for about 2 mins. and check for leaks..Goodluck...

How do i get to the oil filter on a 2009 malibu 4 cylinder? Is an OTC filter ok for this car?

the oil filter is located at the front of the engine and is under the plastic engine cover. Pull off the oil cap and give the cover a slight tug, it should come off. the filter is a canister filter and you will need a big socket I think a 36 mm and a long extension. Leave the oil plug out when you pull the filter as it holds about a half qrt of oil. The filter element is just snapped into the cap. replace the filter and o-ring and tighten it back down untill snug. Do not crank that baby on there or it will never come back off! Put the drain drain plug back in, make sure you get the o-ring in the correct groove or it will leak. And yes OTC filters work just fine. Gm has used this design for almost 8 years
