if its a zf gearbox which i think it will be they are troublesome you need to get the fault codes out of the powertrain control module to help with this one it may not be the gearbox but the torque converter. the lock up clutch seling ring on the box input shaft fails and puts the gearbox in get you home mode, was the gearbox and converter replaced or repaired ? is the fluid level ok ? its sometimes better to go to a jag dealer who have got the correct equipment to sort it out. have you any garantee on the previos work?

One simple thing to check on x type autos is the fuse for the battery backed sounder is ok,the fuse also supplies the relay winding for the tcm {transmission control module] if it blows it puts the light on makes the car go in to get u home mode. if the sounder does not work that could be the problem, {it gets full of water} and blows the fuse, you really need to get the dtc codes out of the tcm to help sort this out, but to be honest if its got a jatco.[ Japanese auto transmission co.] its a rubbish gearbox, and more than likely needs replacing, you have to consider the cost for sorting repair if u want to keep your car, or changing car. I have changed more x type auto gearboxes in my job @ a jag dealer than my age. I am now retired. hope this helps depends on how much you love your car.

What is the fault code in the transmission control modules memory, if the light is on the code must be read with a special scan tool through the vehicles diagnostic service port.

SOURCE: 1998 Jaguar XJ8L Gear Box (transmission) Fault Light On

If you check, the replacement the dealer installed in your car was likely a "certa" unit which is another word for a factory rebuild. Therefore a rebuilt transmission will not be anything "new"
If you press the issue, you will likely get Jag to replace yours with another certa unit. You may need to make a bit more "noise" though.
In choosing a private shop to do this work, ask around and see who has a really good reputation."Branded" shops are franchises and as different as dogs and cats when it comes to quality. If you have friends with a similar car, see who they have used. If you use a private repair shop ask who they "job" their trans work out to.
It may take a bit of shopping but you likely will find someone who can do the right job for you!

SOURCE: x-type jaguar automatic (gear box fault)

I have a 2002 X type (2 litre. done 44000 miles), dash showed gear box problem, (red circle light up). I pulled out and turned the engine off. 5 minutes later turned the engine on. The engine running but the car would not drive either in drive or reverse. Turned the engine off again and on the car driving but not much power. The care is taken to the Jag. dealer and told is misfiring + some gear box faults. Suggesting to change some coils and see (cost about £200+). also possible need to change the gear box costing about £2500+. Please advice. Shall I go ahead with the repair? Should I part exchange.

if it is a jatco 5 speed box it needs rebuilding or replacing. rubbish gearbox, but double check selector cable adjustment first.try using a fault code reader to check dtc codes in the tcm,[transmission control module] was the fluid clean that you drained out? or did it look dark instead of crimson and smell burnt? did you check the level with the fluid temp between 30c and 50c the correct procedure if not followed and you get it wrong can make a big difference to gearbox performance, but it sounds like the box is on its way out have.worked on these cars since day one.

I have a 94 Jaguar xj6. the transmission light is on. it shifts hard in maybe 1st and 2nd gear. I've changed the transmission ecu, transmission relay, and fuses that have to do with the gearbox.

Change the xmission fluid and filter. If that doesnt fix it, it could be the solenids, the soleniod pack, what evey they call it on a Jag.

Jaguar s-type gearbox fault when on motorway

Check under the driver side fuse box which below left of the steering wheel if there is any dampness then it s screwing the ecu, this could be due to a seal leak in the window or holes near the axle.ALso the transmission needs fluid to be change as most jag trans fluid need replacing before 75k, clearing the codes will clear the engine light which also improve the cars shifting.

GEARBOX FAULT MESSAGE

i had the same problem with my s-type, when i went to jaguar dealer for diagnostic and they told me it was trans problem, need new trans and will cost me $4500 to fix it, so i think you will be better off looking for a salvage trans to put it in your car, it will cost you around $1500-$2500 including labor. i hope that will help some of you with gear box fault massage. oh try and find some one who knows a lot about jaguar before you send the car for trans repairs.

GEARBOX FAULT MESSAGE for jaguar s 2001

Replace transmission and sell quickly. I bought 2001 s-type in October 2008. I have not been able to drive it. 1st thing was gearbox fault message which turned out to be transmission. Ford can rebuild cheaper. Next thing to happen was all seals needed replacing. Then all coils needed to be replaced. Coils keep going out. Needs new computer which has 8 year/80000 mile warranty on, but Jag would not honor ($3000). Needless to say my pretty jag sits in the driveway. Had to get another car. Went with Lincoln LS V8. GREAT car!
