SOURCE: 96 Ranger, "popping" sounds from Engine compartment

if it has been awhile since the belt was changed it may be a good idea to change it and get a timing light and check the timing also make sure the beads in the catalytic converter is not releasing and starting to plug up the exhaust system

Possibly you have a leaky or cracked exhaust manifold. After the engine heats the metal expands and creates a larger gap. As the engine speeds up the engine noise overcomes the exhaust leak noise and you don't really notice it much until the vehicle gets in to a hard pull or comes to and idle.

It sounds like you have a miss fire event going on. look for spark jumping from the plug wires to the engine or any metal object. Best way to see is start you truck at night open the hood you should be able to see the spark jumping

Are you sure that the change in elevation is changing the problem? Or is it just quit after the engine warms up? Does it do it when you get back home? The reason I am asking if the idle is normal after warming up and only high when it is cold, I would suggest the mass air flow sensor. But need to make sure that it is a elevation issue.

1999 Honda Accord; making a popping sound in idle (as if popping popcorn under the hood). What could this be?

there could be a slight hole in one of the air intale hoses and can only be heard at idle as drowned out by engine noise , i'd get the OBD codes read this should tell you which , if any , sensor/switch etc could be causing this issue, keep me posted if you wish

I would like to know what causes the popping sound under my Hood on my 2003 Buick Lesabre only when I am leaving and coming to a complete stop do I hear the Popping Sound and not when its on Idle, Can

Sounds like you possibly have bad motor mounts, causing the engine to shift when you accelerate or brake. One of the mounts is located on the lower driver side toward the front. Another is located on the passenger side and runs from the frame between the engine pulleys to the engine. Visually check to see if the rubber is intact in it. If it is missing or damaged, replace. Bad engine mounts can damage the trans-axle and other components.

5 speed manuel transmission

There could be a number of problems. One could be your c.v. axles. Another could be the transmission itself. Before the car stopped moving did you notice a popping sound when you turned the wheel? Or while shifting where there any points when it felt like the car would idle like it's in neutral?

I can shift into drive but it won't engage

sounds like a broken shift cable. (the connection between the shifter and the gearbox) common symptoms are the shifter move easier than normal.and does not move to any gears (not even park or neutral).

Whining noise is probably in one of the pulleys or belts. Probably the power steering. And the popping is probably CV axles.

Cavalier popping sound

If you are in neutral or park and its popping then either you have engine mechanical problems like a hydraulic lifter not properly lubricated or a main bearing going bad. But if accelerating and it pops only, then it sounds like a bad constant velocity knuckle going bad. More details!!!
