Question about 2007 Mercury Milan V6 AWD Sedan

Check engine light came on. Scan indicated bad thermostat. Computer was cleared and light came back on about after about 600 miles of driving. Light stayed on for approx. 300 miles then went off and has not come back on since. Temp gauge runs on cool side and when on interstate gauge drops to half way between half and cold. Around town it runs just below half way. My gas mileage has dropped 5 miles per gal. Took to Ford to have thermostat changed and they said a scan of computer indicated there was nothing wrong - no code listed. They suggested not changing it. My question is, I feel it is a bad thermostat. I am worried instead of being stuck open, is there a chance it could close while driving? Would it be better having it changed even though there are no codes listed?

I agree, running too cold is terrible for fuel milage and also sets a code. make sure that the tech uses the proper coolant for your make and model vehicle, Mixing 2 different coolants can create a mess in the cooling system

SOURCE: gas mileage dropping

While changing all the filters and things, did you change the fuel filter? It could have just been poor quality fuel which can be caused by getting fuel from the bottom of the barrel so to say. If the station you got the gas at was getting low there is a chance that there was water in the fuel. Normally this would cause the vehicle to run a little bit rough, but not always. I would run another tank of fuel through it and see what you get on a second tank.

any of those sensors can cause that but the best thing to do is scan it or check for a vacuum leak with a smoke machine.

Engine problem indicator will not turn off,car runs smooth, temperature lower than normal ?

If the Engine light is on, That means the car's computer has detected a problem in your car and stored a code. So you need to scan it to see whats wrong even if the car is running smooth, Any autopart store will scan the car for you for free and give you the code. Good luck

I have a problem on my chevrolet the check engine light on and the code is p0010 p0128 and p0641 thank you.

Causes A code P0010 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty oil control valve (OCV)
  • Open or short in the VVT/VCT circuit
  • Open or short in the OCV / solenoid valve
  • Damaged computer (PCM)
Possible Solutions Some recommended troubleshooting and repair steps are:
  • Carefully inspect the Bank 1 VVT/VCT system circuit wiring and connectors, repair as required
  • With a warm engine, test the operation of the OCV, replace/repair as needed

A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Low engine coolant level
  • Leaking or stuck open thermostat
  • Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
  • Faulty coolant temperature sensor ECT
  • Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
Possible Solutions Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:
  • Verify coolant strength & level
  • Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat
P0641 is a generic code for a possible bad ECU. I would first fix the other two issues and then clear the check engine light and see if it comes back on. If it does, then you have a possible bad ECU and will need to run further tests to see if that is the case or not

My 1997 ford expedition check engine light came on a few weeks ago when i stop at a red light the truck starts shaking real bad i think that i have a vaccum leak, and under the hood i hear air blowing

Yes if you have an engine vacuum leak it will cause this condition and turn on the Check Engine light in the dash. Please go under the hood with a can of carburetor spray and spray around the top of the engine, careful to keep it off the paint, when you hit a vacuum leak the engine idle will change, zero in on that spot. Repair as necessary.

My 1999 Ford Mustang is missfiring very bad. I already chaged the EGR valve. What's next?

Does the car have a check engine light illuminated on the dash? If it does take it to autozone and have them scan the computer for trouble codes they do it for free, then you can go on from there with further diagnosing....

Check engine light, and engine temp gauge drops. Otherwise car is running well.

If the thermostat is stuck open, the engine temperature will drop and set a fault code indicating that the engine is not reaching operating temperature. This will cause your check engine light to come on. Have someone scan your engine computer. Most large parts chains will scan for codes at no cost to you. If there is a "Thermostat" or "Engine temp low in closed loop" or a similar code indicating low engine temperature, replace the thermostat.

What could be the reasons for the check engine light to come on and stay on?

if your engine is running different then before the check light came on. have your computer system checked for error codes. start there. or your owners manual. or a service manual at your local auto store.

Right indicator light blinks at doulde the speed

Bad bulb. When a turn signal bulb blows the other bulb on the same side will blink twice as fast since there is only half the load on the circuit. If the engine light came on at the same time the bulb blew then it probably meant that the computer notice the drop in resistance in the circuit and came on to let you know something is wrong. Change the bulb and have the engine code scanned/cleared. Autozone will scan and clear the code for free, except in Ca.

Check Engine illumination indicator comes on ocassionally when

That light indicates that your car's computer has an error message awaiting you. To find out what that message is you must have the computer scanned. It used to cost up to $100 to have a scan done at a dealership but now AAMCO repair shops and some auto parts chains scan for free. Get a free scan if you can and when you have it scanned ask them to reset it which will clear the memory and end the light coming on again unless there actually is a problem. Joe

please rate my answer as very helpful. thanks

Take the vehicle to an autoparts store and have them scan the computer for fault codes stored in the computer. Most part stores will do the scan for free. The check engine light indicates that the computer has noted a fault in one of the vehicle's systems and getting the codes will show what the computer has identified so it can be addressed. Hope this helped and best wishes.
