Live in "HOT" Arizona and AC does not work properly. The freon is full, the compressor works, when turned to Max AC, the freon dryer is ice cold but the air coming out of the vents is not cold, maybe 5-10 degrees less than outside temp. Any Suggestions? Thank you, Joe

Not a home mechanic job thats for sure ,check youre pollen filter isnt choked up if thats ok then you need a specialist repairer because the venturi offrice is blocked which means that the high pressure gas isnt going through the small hole causing it to stay hot.must ge er indoors moaning

You've got some of the picture, but not all of it. You need to know what the high and low side readings are, so yes you do need the gauge set. If the system is charged, and the low side is not dropping below 25psi, I would guess the low side pressure switch is faulty. But if the low side is dropping below 20psi when the compressor stops, the system may be low on freon. Which means you have a leak somewhere. The hissing noise is freon flowing thru the system which could also indicate a low charge.
The rear defrost is an electric switch for the defroster in the rear glass. If you turn on the ac and do not get cold air, the first thing to check is if the compressor is running. If not, you could be low on freon or have an electrical problem in the circuit for the ac clutch. If the compressor is running and one of the ac lines is ice cold, you could have a blend door problem under the dash.
My lincoln had the same issue, first it was the A/C compressor (original). I replaced it with another one (used) and worked for 1 month. Then back to hot air. "A/C experts" told me the compressor was out again. I took it to a Mexican auto shop, old building where the guy works alone and to my surprise...HE FOUND THE PROBLEM!! There was no freon leaks, the lines were freezing cold inside the motor, checked freon>>full. He then checked the filter. This filter is on the end of the line where it is crimped that allows the freon to flow thru. Im no mechanic so explaining what it is, forgive me. I can only show you...the line is silver ad in front of you by the radiator, and its the same tube that goes to where you plug it to add freon. There is a filter that was clogged up and prevented the freon from flowing. He removed all the freon, vacuumed out the system/line, and replaced the filter for less that $3.00. Added freon and his cost was $80.00. Thank God for honest people who work hard for a living. I buy the parts, he replaces and I continue to give him my business. Other expensive auto shops with fancy buildings/prices My Lincoln Mark LT now blows arctic cold air!!!
Not sure how you know if the freon is full without the unit running. There are a number of switches which can keep your A/C from coming on. There is a low pressure switch which is usually located on the larger line and sometimes located on a silver cannister (called an accumulator) which is the low side of a compressor circuit. There is also a high pressure cutout which is usually located on the back of the compressor unit. Both of these switches can be jumpered out to see if they are the reason for the compressor not working. You remove the two wire connector to either switch and place a small jumper wire between the two wires on the connector block. The other reason my be a low idle cutout switch and this will also usually be located near on on the compressor. You can also test it the same way as the other switches. If it is the low pressure switch then of course you will need to add freon which you can purchase from any auto parts store. They usually come with instructions and all the equipment needed to add in freon. If it is high pressure, then some of the freon should be recovered from the system by a technician. If is the low idle cutout then you will have to take it to a mechanic to understand why it is idling so low. Hope this helps.
I would check the following possibilities: 1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.
2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.
Could be other issues, but I would start with these.
There may be a problem with the AC compressor pressure cycling switch, it turns the AC compressor on and off as required to maintain proper pressure in the system, it is located in the low side line (large AC line) under the hood, it will have 2 or 3 wires going to it.
