Question about 1999 Chevrolet Astro
1999 Astro Van will go into reverse, but no forward gears. Transmission has 90,000 and was rebuilt 6yrs ago. Overall, the vehicle has 180000 gentle miles on it. Changed the filter and added fluid lost. Could it be the shifting selonoids? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Is there any odor to the trans fluid? Does it have any burned smell on the dipstick?

Check the fuse blocks for blown fuses. We had a similar problem with one of our trucks, and it was a TCS or TCM (transmission system) fuse. Don't forget to check the fluid level (while running in park)

Transmission fluid is about 5 qts for a filter change and 13 qts for a rebuild. I would check the dipstick just to be sure, if it has one. Other wise it has 2 bolts on the side of the tranny, one for fill, one for the level, fill it up through the top hole till it weeps out the bottom, it should be full.

From a totally dry condition with Torque Converter empty the book indicates 4 Quarts. The best way to check is to add 1 pint if you are at the low marks with the engine warm and idling in Park. If you have drained the Transmission to change the filter, start by adding a quart and then check level and add a pint then check level, continue the process of adding fluid a pint at a time and checking level until you get the level to a place between the marks. Drive the vehicle for a few blocks, check and add fluid as needed.
