Question about 1985 Honda Accord

1 Answer

Failed start after jump start. Replaced all main fusible links (the 65 amp and one other was blown), charged battery, bought new battery terminal, no dashboard lights. Dome light, headlights, and horn work.

Check relay for dash lights. Fuses that blow sometimes destroy relays.

Where is the dashboard relay? Is it one of those little white boxes hanging behind the fuse box?

  • zane2626 Mar 18, 2014

Typically a relay is a small black box looking fuse the size of a strawberry. If they are not in the fuse box look under the hood in a black box the size of a shoebox or so to the fender.

The battery is new the alternator is good but the battery is dying

Your alternator has a fusible link coming from the battery to the alternator, fuse probably is blown. The link is in a box next to the battery.

Will not start or click when hitting the ignition switch. have replaced the starter, charged the battery and cleaned the battery terminals

Use voltmeter or test lamp to see if you are getting power to ignition switch. Could be blown fusible link or bad switch.

Polarity was reversed when jump starting vehicle installed new battery & no power to anything mechanic said fuse got blown. What fuse, where it is located & cost of it.

Hard to say without make, year, and model-but check all fuses in the power distribution box under the hood- ignition, alternator fuse, etc.-all of them, the small ones and the maxi-fuses. All fuses are pretty cheap. If you still have nothing, you may need a wiring diagram to check for fusible links that would be power distributors right off or near the battery. Fusible links work much like a fuse, and most have been replaced by maxi-fuses, but many vehicles have both. If there is a designated main fuse, it should be in the distribution block or box under the hood.

first of all change the fusible link, there should be 2 others so follow the positive wire connected to the battery , if any of these blow out, the mapping of power stops at them

IF THE BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED, 12.60 VOLTS & THE CABLES ARE CLEAN & TIGHT, THERE ARE FUSIBLE LINKS AT THE STARTER THAT SUPPLY POWER TO EVERYTHING IN THE VEHICLE. THEY ARE FASTENED ON THE SAME LARGE TERMINAL AS THE MAIN BATTERY CABLE ON THE STARTER. THE FUSIBLE LINKS ARE SPECIAL WIRES DESIGNED TO BURN INTO IF A SHORT CIRCUIT HAPPENS. THE BIG BLACK THING THERE IS NOT A FUSE, IT IS JUST A CONNECTOR. TO FASTEN THE MAIN WIRE TO THE FUSIBLE LINK WIRE. IF YOU PULL ON THE FUSIBLE LINK IT WILL STRETCH LIKE STIFF RUBBER. IF IT STRETCHES IT WILL NEED TO BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED. IF IT DOESN'T STRETCH IT IS PROBABLY OK & IT MAY BE A BAD CABLE.

No engine start or any windo raido head lights nothing

Couple of things could be wrong. I would first try to have someone jump start your car, if it stays on, probably your battery, if it does not stay on, probably your alternator. Batteries you can get just about anywhere, just bring in your old one when you make your purchase to make sure its the correct one. Alternators can run you $90 - $150 depending on engine size, new or remfurbished. Check with your local auto parts store. Also, check your fuses (under the hood and inside) and make sure your battery terminals / clamps are clean. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Hi,

Initially, pls try checking the fusible link that supplies the main power from the battery to the electrical system of your vehicle. This wire is inline with the big battery cable on the positive battery terminal. Often, there would be a connector at its end (about 6 inches from the terminal) before joining the main harness. Clean/Scrape/replace or altogether cut it and just splice the fusible link to the wire.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
