You might want to change or at least inspect the thermostat. you can also try jumping the fans to see if they are working. You also have 2 relays under the hood that control your rad fan speeds you can check them to see if they are working. This would be a good place to start without throwing a lot of parts at it.

SOURCE: 2001 Kia Optima over heating

I figured this out and fixed it on my 2001 Optima. Mine was an electrical problem, not an overheating problem. The problem shows up when there is a heavier than normal load on the electrical system. For most of us, this is when the air conditioner is running full-blast on a hot summer day. However, it was also occuring when I ran the heater full blast. The heater running full-blast should have lowered the temperature, not raise it. So I tested the coolant temp while the gauge was showing it overheating. The coolant temp was not increasing, but the gauge showed that it was. It is caused by a bad ground connection. Another test you can do to see if your problem is the same as mine is this. As soon as the engine is showing overheating, pull over, park the car and turn off the engine. Immediately start the engine again and see what the temp gauge shows. If it still shows hot, you'll know you've really got overheating coolant. If it goes back to normal range, you'll know it's just a bad ground connection. Turning off the engine eliminates the resistance in the electrical system that has beeen building up and causing an erroneous high temp reading.

To fix: Either find and clean ground connections throughout the vehicle until it fixes it, or do what I did. A mechanic at the Kia dealer showed me this. I ran a new wire from an empty bolt-hole on the top of the engine to a bolt into the frame behind the engine. I only added a 6 inch wire and a new bolt into the top of the engine. The bolt into the frame was already there, so I just removed it, put the wire under it, and replaced the bolt. It created a redundant ground that prevented the build-up of resistance that caused the erroneous temp reading. It was a 5 minute fix and it has never done it again. Kia knows about this problem and they put out a post to their shops on how to fix it.

SS w/3.8l engine. What would cause the first electric fan not run but when temp rises the second fan will come on?

The coolant fan should kick on when temp reaches 192 degrees. Have you changed your thermostat? The 2nd fan is for the a/c. If car is running hot, it's probably thermostat or cooling fan

What would cause fans in a 95 Chevy caprice not to kick on?

Hi, there are several tHings that may be your culprit. First thing , unplug the fan then put 12v to the fan to make sure it works.
Next you can take a test light .to check and see if you have hot and ground at the fan. One of them will be at the plug. Usually a ground for u.s cars, pos, for imports. Now, find the temp sensor for the fan. It may be on the rad., or by the therm. Plug everything back in, run the vech. Be ALAWAYS WATCHING YOUR TEMP...DONT OVERHEAT YOUR MOTOR... when it gets to normal run temp check for voltage at the fan, also at the sendor. If there is no change at the sendor it is bad.

My van is running hot, what could this mean

first i would make sure the fan is coming on most turn on around 220 the fan should also turn on with the a/c on if the fan works check for leaks low coolant level will make it run hot even more when the coolant is to low to reach the temp sensor delaying fan operation

The van stalls and dies when its hot outside.

try this it may work as i dont know your area, as im in uk but remove the air temp sensor on the filter box and see if that works, if it does it could just need replacing or you need a remap to the ecu as its reading the wrong signal. could even be a bad connection to the ecu so might just need a good clean on the ecu connector.

most time coolant temperature sensor faulty.but check cooling fan fuse and relay.then hot wire the cooling fan if fan runs.problem in the fan wiring or pcm.if every thing else okay.if cooling fan dont run when hot wired the cooling fan need replacing fan motor has internal open winding circuit.

95 monte carlo 3.1 cooling fan comes on at 3/4 temp, when the coolant temp sensor is disconnected both fans run strongly until car is shut off, but when its connected only 1 fan will come on at 3/4 temp

to check both fans work at high temps put a sheet of card over the rad to block off airflow and run engine till hot, keeping an eye on when they both start (one is set at a lower temp than the other),if the second fan dont start when the engine is really hot THEN you have a problem.....

I change thermostat radiator cap I flush the radiator and it still geting hot. I noticed something the fan don't turn on until it reaches the line in the half of the temp. Gauge and only is on for 40 secs....

CHECK COOLING FAN FUSE AND RELAY.IF BOTH ARE GOOD.HOT WIRE COOLANT FAN.IF FAN DONT RUN FAN MOTOR NEEDS REPLACING. IF FAN MOTOR RUN WHEN YOU HOT WIRE IT.YOUR FAN MOTOR ELECTRICAL WIRES DAMAGED OR HAS SHORTS OR THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY.

Car is off a fan is still running

Does it keep running or shut off after a bit? the fan will run untill the coolant tempeture switch is satisfied, but chrysler mini vans are notorious for electrical problems that usuall surround dash problems, could be a bad collant temp sensor or a stuck relay
