Question about 2004 Chevrolet Impala
Car jerks going uphills, not very fast. Read that cat coverter may be clogged? Can\'t afford to dump lots of money into it or to have someone fix my car. Help!
Good morning! for the most part O2 sensors are contaminated due to an incorrect fuel/air mixture...They are an effect rather than a cause...symptoms of jerking up hill and not very fast would indicate a defective Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS) or Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor...Here is least expensive fix...Buy a can of DeOxit from radio shack...Remove and spray O2 sensors...This is a NO-Touch cleaner...Reinstall...Using a voltmeter set to read 5 volts...TPS is bolted to the throttle body and has following colored wires...Black, Gray and Dark Blue...with connector in place push two safety pins into the rear of connector on Dark Blue plus lead and Black negative lead...Start engine...At idle meter must read .08 volts...Bump idle to full... Meter must read 4.2 volts...If reading never gets higher than 2 volts...TPS is the problem...see image

A totally bad cat would result in a loud hissing sound when you accelerate.
Cat codes are not always cat, but could be the oxygen sensors. (most likely the issue)
Can you get me the trouble codes?
Example of the code is P0300 or P1429
Most auto parts stores will scan your computer for free and give you the codes.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

I have had the same issue..
I solved it by replacing the Manafold Air Pressure sensor, and the Mass Air Flow sensors, has not had a problem since.
The parts are fairly easy to replace yourself if you are mechanically inclined, however if you do not feel comfortable in doing this work yourself, take it to the shop.
My dad had the same issue on his Buick, and after the factory replaced coil packs, plugs and wires, they finally decided to change out the MAP sensor and that fixed it for him.

With modern cars it is bad when the engine light just comes on and the vehicle does something very different. It should not be driven. If the car is smelling of fuel and jerking it is because it's miss-firing (i.e. one or more cylinder is not getting spark but is getting fuel). This can be anything from electrical/electronic to mechanical like a broken rotor cap (as an example). The good thing, is that the light is coming on and a mechanic can check the ECU for error codes. Alternatively, you can buy or barrow one your self and check it out on your own (I think even certain auto-part stores will check it for you as long as you get in the zone;). 1996 is a good year for that since that is when OBDII started and all vehicles started using the same port to check for issues.

Soujnds like your throttle positioning sensor is going bad. This is the sort of thing that happens before they go completely out.

Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.

engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some
error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer
needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the
further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light
indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer
noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.
more help, I suggest you to refer the help links provided below. These will let
you know more about which areas to look, check, when there is engine light
coming up on dash panel.

following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any
electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.
engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only
for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the
transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in
most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory
of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as
the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done
is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system
for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for
engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained
technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then
based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the
correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer
replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other
basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with
the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine.
The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear
engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related
problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many
drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms
