There is a small shift lock control in the shifter housing.... It's controlled by a switch behind the brake pedal.

Sometimes those switches come loose and/or break off.

I would check near the brake pedal with the engine running....

Get your ear close and press pedal by hand and listen for the clicking sound as you press down.

You would hear the clicking near the shifter if the switch was working.

If you don't hear it, the problem is either the switch at the pedal or the control at the base of the shifter itself.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: bad heater core on my 2001 lincoln navigator

This is definitely not a job for the at home mechanic. the dash will probably have to come out and this is a very time consuming and laborious task. I would recommend you find a job that you can trust, or get several estimates on the work before you decide who to let do the work. I would expect something like this to run at least $700.00 to $1000.00

Look at the swith on the brake pedal, it shoud have two green wires on it. Make sure it is not melted or the wire is broken. If it is damaged you can connect the 2 wires together to get it into gear, but this should be temporary as it bypasses the neutral safety switch.

Problems shifting out of park in a 2006 Lincoln Navigator

Usually this is caused by the circuit board which is part of the bezel.Ford has a technical service bulletin out on this. Here is a copy of the TSB

TSB 06-2-3
FLOOR MOUNTED SHIFTER STUCK IN PARK

Publication Date: January 13, 2006

LINCOLN: 2005-2006 Navigator

ISSUE: Some 2005-2006 Navigators may exhibit the floor shifter stuck in Park due to an electrical system concern or by damage from liquid intrusion.
ACTION: Follow the latest online Workshop Manual diagnostics in section 307-05. If diagnostics lead to an inoperative brake shift interlock circuit board which may have been damaged due to liquid intrusion. The brake shift interlock circuit board is located on the bezel. Replace only the bezel assembly, current service parts contain all liquid diverter design changes. Do not replace the entire shifter assembly.

NOTE: DAMAGED CAUSED BY LIQUID INTRUSION IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY.

STUCK IN PARK. WILL NOT SHIFT

Your vehicle is equiped with a Brake Shift Interlock which means if the brake is not pressed the shifter will not go out of park. That switch could be bad. You can bypass this shift by using the following procedure. I hope this helps and good luck.

My 2003 aviator gear is locked in park and will not move

check to see if your brake lights work. No? check your brake light fuse. OK? change your brake light switch. Your brake light switch powers the brake / shifter interlock. There is usually a way to bypass the interlock- check your owners manual for bypass button location ( its usually next to the shifter)

I HAVE A 2005 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR AND THE SHIFTER IS STUCK IT DONT MOVE

The neutral safety switch might need adjusting. That is what makes it necessary to press the brake pedal before you can shift out of park. it is also possible that something broke inside the shifter. Many parts are made of plastic and it isn't just Ford products that are having this problem.

A safety feature on your car is that it will not shift out of "park" if you are not applying the brakes . Make sure your doing that while trying to shift out of park .
