Is there any particular difficulty in replacing the gaiter on the nearside of the steering rack? I seem to be losing power steering fluid from that side.

You will have to pull out the steering rack to replace the oil seals, tht rubber gaiter is just a protection to dust and water!

Something wrong with Power Steering

1. Check that the serpentine belt is still intact and still in position over all the pulleys on the engine including the power steering pump.

2. Check the power steering fluid level. If very low or empty you obviously have a significant power steering fluid leak which could be from a ruptured flexible hose, a leaky hose connection, a leak from the power steering pump itself or leaks from the fluid seals in the steering rack. If the PS pump has been run with very low fluid it will have been pumping air and will be damaged.

3. If the PS pump itself has failed you will obviously lose PS assistance and a bad pump would need to be replaced.

4. Since you have not checked anything on the car no one here can tell you the likely source of your particular PS failure.

5. The steering wheel should still turn but if the car is not moving it will be extremely heavy and difficult to move.without PS assistance so don't attempt to drive it in its present condition.

My 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP has a power steering leak but seems to work well. my mechanic wants to replace the whole rack and pinion, but that seems extensive for a leak. any suggestions?

Anytime a power steering compononent is leaking it requires replacement. whether or not you choose to replace it is up to you. if you lose all power steering fluid you will lose your power assist however mechanical steering ability is still maintained.

Power steering light on and power steering disabled. Problem intermittent-what is cheapest solution?

Check the fluid level. Are you losing fluid from the pump, hoses, or steering rack and pinion cylinder? Look at wrecking yard parts if anything needs to be replaced. If the fluid is just seeping out of a seal, try a seal-softening additive first.

I have a 2003 chevy blazerthat has power steering problem no leak

There is a "pressure regulator" located in the pump just behind the high pressure line that directs high pressure fluid to the steering rack when you turn the steering wheel. It sounds like the regulator valve is sticking and not sending the high pressure fluid to the steering rack when you turn the wheel.
You can remove the pump and clean the valve, reinstall the pump and flush the steering system with fresh fluid or replace the pump and flush the system with new fluid.
Good luck.

Power Steering Fluid Leak, boiling fluid.

Look at the steering rack on the side of the car that you think the leak is, look for the steering rack boot or gaiter, it looks like a black circular accordian type thing.
If this is bulging and leaking fluid the seal in the end of the rack is gone, this is one of the most common faults of leaking fluid and at the rate you are losing fluid, the leak is on the pressurised side of the system after the pump (the seal at the end of the rack)
