Question about 2009 Chevrolet Equinox AWD
The battery on my 2009 Chevy equinox had drained over night for unknown reasons, I charged the battery back to life and all of a sudden the stabilitrek off light appeared and the steering became very stiff, is there anything I can do before I call a tow truck? Please help,,,love this site,
Apparently you left the battery disconnected from the vehicle long enough to erase some of it's memory. When the dealer services the charging system they have a temporary current source to keep pcm and bcm memories current. You may have to take it to a dealer and have it re flashed. There are electrical components in the braking and steering system besides hydraulics and they can be affected by variations in voltage.

Heavy steering is an indication that the drive belt for the power steering is loose or missing. IT may be that that is the reason for a flat battery as the belt will also drive the alternator and the battery has drained down trying to supply the power to the electrical parts.. With a flat battery there may be a problem with the CPU program so use a code reader to reset it and then see if the light comes on.

Testimonial: "Thanks for writing back, the belt is in good shape and the right tension is applied, had alternator and battery tested and all is good there, brought it to a mechanic, after 30 minutes of going over the veichle quickly they couldn't determine a source of the problem, I'm bringing it back tomorrow so they can do some further testing on the electronics, hope all goes cheaply,, lol thanks again,,"

first and it's sort of obvious... make sure the motor is off.... look for a cap at the front of the motor where the fan belt is... may even be labled power steering ... you add the fluid there

SOURCE: 2007 Equinox. No power steering,
Had same problem, went to work everything was fine, then got in vehicle getting ready for lunch......no power steering and service stabilitrak light came on. End result was power steering motor needed replaced. Motor controls the power to the rear wheels along with the power steering.

If you get an ABS (anti lock brake system) light on as well, you probably have a bad front wheel bearing (the ABS wheel speed sensor is built-in). Check the harnesses going to the sensors first, they may be damaged from turning. If no ABS light accompanying the Stabilitrak message, then you will need to get it scanned for a diagnostic code to further evaluate.
