If you don't hear knocking (pinging or grinding combustion) from the engine when you jump on the accelerator you can just use regular gas. If you do hear those noises then you need to move up to a higher octane (slower burning) fuel.
start with premium gas or injector cleaner, could be a low octane ping. this may be hard to diagnose with out hearing the noise so the other thing i would have you do is remove the belts and run the engine. sometimes when a bearing in an alternator, idler pulley, a/c compressor or belt tensioner goes bad they can make a clicking noise. try to listen if the noise is coming from the belt area, the transmission area or some other spot. spin all the pulleys with the engine off and wiggle them to see if any are bad
It sounds like the engine is "pinging" as you are speeding up. If so, this is often caused by plugged EGR passages at the intake elbow or a non-functioning EGR valve. The EGR valve allows a small amount of exhaust gasses back into the intake manifold to slow and cool the combustion down slightly to prevent the fuel from burning too fast [which we hear as a pinging sound] and it helps reduce emissions at the tailpipe. When the valve quits working or the passages get blocked the pinging sound will be heard when accelerating or at higher speeds & heavier loads. Pinging is not good for an engine and should be checked out as soon as possible. A quick test drive with a good service tech should quickly narrow down the cause of the noise. The only reason to run higher octane fuels to to reduce the chance of (engine ping) or (engine knock).Try the regular gas(dont completely fill car) and take notice under hard acceleration if engine makes a pinging noise.If pinging happens then add some high octane gas to compensate for regular.Unless this is a modified engine the regular gas will not do any damage it will result in pinging and loss of fuel milelage.
Timing is only one of many causes of "pinging".
Before altering the factory setting or connections, please do each of the following:
1. Change your oil and filter.
2. Add fuel system cleaner to your gas tank.
3. Spray fuel injector cleaner into your air intake (after the air filter) while the engine is running. (Do this slowly enough to not stall the engine.)
4. If you use "off-brand" gas, consider adding a $1.00 bottle of Octane Booster - from the Dollar Store.
I suspect that one of the above will correct the problem. If the Octane Booster corrects the problem, then you do have a timing problem (too far advanced). Take it to the Ford dealer and ask if they have a Service Bulletin on the engine due to pinging - and ask how they would alter the timing. Then either do it yourself or pay them a pre-agreed amount to ****** the timing 2 degrees (no more!!)
When does this noise occur? During idle or acceleration? Is the vehicle warmed up? Is the check engine light on? Are there any codes stored in memory? Was anything done as a repair prior to the noise starting? How many miles is on the unit?
