Question about Volvo Cars & Trucks

Smoke testing leaks

Had a p0455 large leak. I did a evap smoke test on a 2001 s60 Volvo non turbo, and the smoke was coming out of a round 3" long, with a little nipple on it object at the right rear just in front of the back bumper and behind the gas filler tube. Does anyone know what this part is and should I just plug it off.

First off thank you for helping me out here. I have looked at a fue EVAP diagrams and it looks like it is hooked to a hose coming from the shutoff valve. Could this be the air filter or called air cleaner. Dose this mean the the shutoff valve is bad or is there supose to be a hose hooked up to the air

This is probably the EVAP canister purge valve and if it is it will need replacing as it is part of the fuel system and may lead to venting in the tank problems and that will be misfiring, low fuel pressure problems and pump problems .. Take it to an accredited mechanic with Volvo experience and discuss if that is what it is .

So accessing information from a dealer service centre is out of the question so in your case I would get my hands on a workshop manual ( preferably genuine ) . They can be purchased on line as hard copy(book ) or cd from the customer relations department /parts department by going on line to the manufacturer

  • Bill Boyd Mar 19, 2014

The hose probably ment to be connected to the air cleaner of the engine so that the fumes can be burnt off and not allowed to escape to the air

SOURCE: code p0455 evap emission (large)

have the gas cap tested or just replace it, then disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to reset the code, then drive it for a few miles and see if problem comes back, if it does a trip to the dealer is in order, as this may be covered by your emission warranty which is good for 70,000 miles.

SOURCE: p0455 comes back on ,we try to fix it

The EVAP control sytem is checked by the ECM upon the first start of the day when the engine is cool and will trigger the DTC code P0445. If you have a vacuum line leak when it's cold and seals it self when it warms up then the code will stay there. After warming up the car reset the ECM to clear any DTC codes and see if any MILL shows up. IF not then there is a leak only when the system is cold so your going to have to try to do a smoke test when the system is cold.
The other thing is to check all the vacuum lines and fittings around the canister and fuel tank for any lose clamps ECT.
Good luck and keep me posted. Be glad to help you

SOURCE: Received P0455 Evap System Large Leak Detected - 2004 Cavalier

your problem is probably a vacuum hose that goes from the purge valve to the gas tank (crack or broken hose). There should be two of these check both. A broken vacuum line will make the purge valve make a clicking noise that can be mistaken for noisy engine valves.

Code is for the evap system which vents gas fumes from the tank.
Could be anything from a bad gas cap to a leak in the vent system.

04 trailblazer cel has a p0455 code what could be the problem ,it has a new gas cap

A large or gross leak in the EVAP System is not always a gas cap. Have to smoke test the system with an EVAP Smoke Machine & use a scan tool to test & actuate system components

What does check engine code P-0455 and P-1684 mean?

P1684 - Battery Disconnected Within Last 50 Starts

P0455 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (no purge flow or large leak)
This indicates a fuel vapor leak or lack of purge flow in the EVAP control system. It means a large leak has been detected. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

Symptoms: You likely won't notice any drivability problems.

Causes: A code p0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system

Possible Solutions: With a p0455, the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary

Test and check it. Hope this helps.

My 2001 Jeep has evap leak codes p0455 and p0442, it has been smoke tested and there were no leaks found, but the codes are still there any ideas

I do not know the codes but after a smoke test ,I would use the codes and a schematic to walk down and test every switch or valve in the EVAP System. A professional scanner would be nice,so you could command somethings on and off.

Have a P0455 code on it and would appreciate if some one could tell me possible causes.

There is a bad vacuum leak somewhere in the emmisions evaporative system. Check all the vacuum hoses for cracks and good connections.
If you can't find any, take it and have a smoke test done on it, that will reveal where the leak is.
