Fuel system pressure testing usually will reveal the answer to that question. If your car has the Regina system it will have one pump in the tank. If the pump fails, the car will not start. If the fuel filter is partially blocked, the car usually will start but will lack power and have poor fuel mileage. For the Bosch system, which has two pumps, read on.

If your car has the Bosch system then it will have two pumps. One pump is under the driver seat and the other is in the tank. The pump under the driver seat is the main pump; if it fails, the car will not run. If the tank pump fails, the car will run but the main pump will be very noisy. Additionally, the car generally will bog down making right turns as the fuel sloshes around in the tank without the rear pump working when it's under a half tank of fuel.

The easiest way to tell if your car has the Bosch system is if you have a MAF (Mass Air Flow meter) connected to the air intake plumbing with a six way connector coming out of it and your ignition coil is a traditional-looking can-shaped unit bolted to the passenger side strut tower.

The easiest way to tell if your car has the Regina system is by looking at the ignition coil - it will be square and bolted to the driver's side strut tower near the intake air filter. Also, the intake air filter will have a two-wire harness connected a temperature sensor at the air box instead of the MAF.

When you turn the key, your fuel pump should make a bbzzz sound for a second or two. Try that a couple of times to see if you hear anything. If not, it may be going bad. If if was bad, your vehicle wouldn't stop. If you have over 50,000 miles on your filter, it may need changed. They get clogged sometimes and will cause stalling or hard starts. Hope this helps you.

Fuel pump needs to be replaces on 2000 Chevrolet suburban, do I also need a new filter, relay and induction?

Do you know for sure that the fuel pump failed or do you have a bad relay? If the fuel pump relay is good no you don't need to replace it. The fuel pump unit comes with the sending unit and a sock filter. I would replace the inline fuel filter when you replace the pump. In line fuel filters need to be replaced every 36000 miles. If that filter starts to plug up it makes the pump work harder which leads to premature failure.

I have a Ford Escort 1992 RS2000 Mk 5, does anyone know how the fuel pump works please ?

Fuel pump runs for 2 seconds when key is turned on when the engine starts it continues to keep pressure at 30 PSI while engine is running, If you are going up hill the fuel regulator will kick in increasing fuel rail pressure to 60 PSI If the Fuel Pump does not detect the engine running by th cam shaft or crank shaft sensor the pump will not run. There is a fuel sock on the pump and a fuel filter as well. If it's not running most likely the Fuel Pump Is bad, The ethanol in the fuel eats the old pumps up and destroys the filter. So if you have not replaced the filter or the fuel sock then it's time to do so now. If you want more information let me know and I will give you more.

How do i know if my fuel pump is bad on my 1995

Well that could be a indication of a bad fuel pump, but it could also be a bad or clogged fuel filter, or even a really needing a tune up... When was the last time you changed the plugs and wires? I would do that before I ever got into the fuel pump issue... You can have the pump pressure tested. Do the plugs and wires, next do the fuel and air filters... If that doesnt help have the pressure tested...

Not getting gas from the tank to the engine

Then either the fuel pump has failed, fuel filter is clogged, fuel pump relay is bad, or the fuel pump fuse is blown. Sit in the car in a very quite area or with someone listening at the fuel fill area with the cap removed and turn on the ignition without starting the engine. The fuel pump should come on for a few seconds and then shut down. If it does not then check the fuse and the relay. If it comes on then you know the fuse and relay are good. Replace the fuel filter. If that does not help more than likely the fuel pump is bad and needs replacing. The pump can run and still not be pumping any fuel. A fuel pressure test will verify if the pump is for sure bad. You have an 11 year old vehicle so it would not be uncommon for the pump to go bad especially if the filter has been neglected. A partially clogged fuel filter will destroy an otherwise good fuel pump. You will have to remove the fuel tank in order to replace the fuel pump. Use a hand pump to remove as much fuel as possible from the tank as gasoline weighs around 8 lbs per gallon. The less weight the better. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

My car hesitates and slowsdown while driving

The fuel filter is in the gas tank with the fuel pump - it's actually a 'SOCK' that filters fuel before it enters the pump. Odds are it's not the filter. Odds are you have a Throttle Position Sensor which is going bad (bad spots in the potentiometer). Erratic resistance changes sending BAD signals to the Engine Control Module and Transmission Control Module ECU & TCM. A good technician knows how to check it with an analog ohm meter.

Fuel filter engine shut-down fuel system

How do you know it's the fuel filter and not the fuel pump or a bad vacuum hose? If it's the fuel filter why don't you just change it?
Unless you know how to avoid gasoline everywhere take it to a friend's mechanic.
