Question about 2001 Mazda MX-5 Miata

1 Answer

Dash lights work but do not glow as bright at they once did. Dimmer switch works fine. The section of the dash lights where the vehicle mileage should illuminate does not work at all. Checked all fuses. Any suggestions?

Bulb is busted sometimes they place bulbs which are rubber coated so in time they tend to dim the best way is remove all the bulbs and replace with led you will see the difference

If you visually inspect the wires on the rear window do you see any breaks in the grid?

If so, read the following link:

Sounds (i can't know for sure unless i can test it) like a bad relay or a connection is broken. Have you checked underneath the hood in the fuse box in the engine bay?

Fuse under bonnet f7 also connected to dash/rear lights, but if this blows you would have no indicators as well

You'll have to inspect the brake light switch at the pedal box assy. Damaged switch or wiring could give the previous symptoms you describe.! Good luck

Hi, there is a factory wire (red with a black stripe) in your car for illuminating the stock radio. This wire is not to be used in an aftermarket radio, so you need to make sure it isn't connected and also isolate and bare wire with electrical tape. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Instrument panel lights to dim in daytime

The dimmer switch only works when the headlights are on, When they are off there is a light sensor on the dash that takes over and adjusts the dash lights as needed. It sounds like yours has gone out.

Problem battery goes dead after sitting. Did some testing that led me to lights , possibly dimmer or multi-function switch maybe ignition switch.

a dimmer switch is just a variable resistor and that only passes current at various ratings ( more resistance the lower the light
similarly switches only make and break a circuit so your problem will be after a switch possibly a faulty relay or light control module
some dimmer switches have incorporated an "OFF" section where the light gets progressively dimmer until there is a definite click for off
If your switch has that option then at full resistance but not "off" position then there will be a current flow that will be less that what is required to show light but enough to drain a battery
some vehicles that used this option were older GM or Ford products where the light switch incorporated a dimmer switch as well
the pull to first position put on the dash lights and twisting the knob gave various degrees of brightness in the dash
a further pull turned on the head lights

1994 silverado illumination on instrument panel doesn't work, parking lights and tail lights do not work but headlights and brakelights work fine. All fuses are good. Is this a bad dimmer switch?

No. Dash lights being out could be a bad headlight switch, since the dash lights are routed through the headlight switch, not the dimmer switch. Park and tail lights also controlled by the headlight switch.

Dash lights do not work 2000 ford exploier

All go out at once, first check fuses, then dimmer switch for dash lights, finally headlight switch. To check dimmer switch, pull connection off back, on harness with test light and headlight switch activated, 1 of the leads should have power, if so, use ohm meter on dimmer to make sure it has reading between 0 and some value, if no value, open, dimmer is bad, if there wasn't power then check headlight switch, there should be heavier gauge wire that powers switch and 1 for output to hi/lo switch, smaller gauge wires for tail lamps, dash lights, license plate lamps, parking lights. The color wires from dimmer would correspond to the same colored wires on headlamp switch, probe that connection on headlamp switch with switch engaged and see if you have power, if not replace switch, if so, check wire from switch to dimmer. Now if the lights slowly went from bright one day, to less bright some other day, to not working, then the bulbs are bad... good luck...

Your dash lites are on with headlamps off? I'd check the wiring for headlamp switch/dimmer. Not only check the fuses, check the fuse circuit for voltage, use a test lite. You could use a jumper to bypass dimmer, see if dash lites work.

Dash lights are not working

90% of the time if your dash lights are not working it's due to a blown fuse. Check your fuses for one labeled courtesy lamps. The fuse panel should be located under your passenger side dash. If all the fuses check out fine it could also be a problem with the dimmer switch. Try raising and lowering the brightness using the dimmer switch to see if this has an noticeable affect.

I have a 04 Toyota Tacoma. I have short in the dimmer switch.

It cold just be a fuse that is loose in the fuse box causing the dash lights to come on and off. Or potentially a loose wire from the fuse box the dash lights.
