most likely your brake switch is out. If you had a scanner you would be able to see if the computer see's you pressing on the pedal. Or if you know how to test you could check to see if it switches ( completes the circuit ).

The variable engine speed can be diagnosed by checking for codes. If the charging system was not working, your in-dash battery gauge would show a discharge condition. Most likely the battery has reached the end of its life

Sounds like you need to check your vaccum lines for a leak. This is easy to do. Buy a can on carburator cleaner and with a friends help keep the car running as you spray your vaccum lines with the carburator cleaner one by one. If you have a leak it will **** the cleaner into the lines and cause the vehicle to stall out. Replace the line if this happens and continue checking all lines until all bad lines are replaced.
Sounds like the cable broke at the transmission..While someone moves the shifter look under the hood where the transmission is and see if the linkage moves
