Question about 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

2 Answers

I floored the gas pedal on my 94' Grand Prix on the highway the other day to see what this used engine I got in can do. Well, what ended up happening was when I slowed down and eventully stopped, I smelled sulfur from underneath the car. Plus it also seems like there is not enough thrust and the engine is not showing its full potential. Could this be the Catalytic Converter going bad?

Sounds like it, the catalytic converters can brake up and block the exhaust system with rust bits when they fail.

Not necessarily. It could be the cat, but also could be the O2 sensor and/or mass airflow sensor. I would check those first as they're a lot cheaper than a new cat.

Hi Cheyenne:
- For the vibration, I'd be checking universal joints or CV jounts.
- Sounds like you've got your brakes figured out already. Time for some maintenance.

My 2000 grand prix slows down when I put the gas petal to the floor. We just changed the catalytic converter and it still does it

l'm assuming the air filter and fuel filter was done, you could try a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in a tank less than half full, then getter on the highway and punch it(with in reason) good 1/2 hr trip at least.

2001 Grand Prix GT 3800 series engine

The best solution is to do a complete tune up with new spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve and oil change.. If this still happen I would get some fuel injector cleaner, or use marvel mystery oil in both your oil(crankcase) and gas tank. You can get mystery oil at walmart..its in a red bottle with black label.

Front end vibration

this is most often caused by worn out drive axle constant velocity joints or CV joints as we tech's call them, have them checked for torn boots or excessive wear, I am sure one or both will be found.

Fuel smell on start-up, 94 Grand Prix

Remove the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator and have some one turn the key on if it leaks gas out its bad this will explain the smell. Also does it have a hard time starting when it sits for awhile ?
