If the gear shifter is getting stuck, the shift solenoid or fuse that powers it has gone bad and is not releasing the shifter when you step on the brake, as it should.

How do I get 97 jeep grand cherokee limited out of 4WD part time

sometimes because of non moving part inside of transfer case, elements stuck or gets slower to react against changes in mode. try to switch to another transfer mode in nuetral position and stopping. after switching to desired mode move few hundred meters.

if this does not help you may need to check linkage on transfer case.

Which transfer case you have 242 (Selec-Trac on the shifter bezel) or 249 (Quadra-Trac on the shifter bezel). If it's a 242, you're looking at probable linkage adjustment which is done underneath the vehicle. If it's a 249, you're possibly looking at viscous coupling (VC) lockup.

Adjust the shift linkage; heres what to did...

...the blue arrow indicates where the linkage originally was (the lock nut screw), moved it down the green rectangle is showing the back of front driveshaft near the tcase, just for perspective.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

Transmision Shifting Problem

Was the fluid you drained red or black? did it smell like trans or gear oil? With linkage disconnected, could you put trans in park by moving the lever on the side of the unit? Oil condition is likely a separate issue...most "blown" transmissions generally have normal operation of shift, it just dosen't do what you tell it to. two things likely going on are: linkage problem and likely in need of fluid/filter change.

Make sure the brake lamp switch(es) are working and no blown fuses. Be sure no aftermarket accessories have been improperly installed into these circuits.
