Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

My Ford Escape 2009 is making brief cracking sounds when starting to accelerate and when reaccelerating after taking the foot off the pedal while in motion. Curiously, the problems goes away for a while after washing the car. I had the car serviced for oil and general inspection a few weeks back and mentioned the problem but they did not find anything. I would like to have this problem checked before the car really breaks down on me in the middle of nowhere.

Service bulletin:
TSB 09-25-13: Some 2009-2010 Escape and Mariner vehicles equipped with a 6f35 automatic transmission may exhibit a single hoot noise on light acceleration from a stop.......the noise may be heard at the rear axle....this is a normal characteristic of the vehicle and does not affect transmission function and/or 4wd function or durability.

TSB's corrective action is to install a new transaxle drive chain which is eligible under the provision of a New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage

Testimonial: "Thank you Eric. That's reasurring. However, a cracking sound seems different to a hoot. It did not sound during the first months after I bought it second hand. I will anyway pay close attention to it with windows open and people listening in the back seat to locate the sound source. Sven"

I looked farther into possible causes and after speaking with several other mechanics, we could not pin point the issue.

Possible causes could be the brakes catching. (there is a small chance it could be the tin brake wear warning tab that is attached to the pads. It could also be in the U-joints on the drive shaft. Best bet is to take it to a shop and try to make the noise in front of an honest mechanic.

Actually my Ford Explorer has front wheel drive. And the cracking sound reminds me of an ungreased or broken CV-Joint, except that the latter sounds when making fast close turns. Will check that out!

2002 ford escape starts but wont stay running unless the foot is kept on the pedal. took it to a shop and had a diagnostic test on it. It's saying there is nothing wrong. Mechanic said it must be

Computers rarely fail. The diagnostic would not show anything wrong unless a trouble code is set UNLESS the diagnostic used live data vieew. Most shops dont do that . So at what RPM does it not die? How many miles are on it? Ford uses something called an idle air speed motor. They are prone to fouling.

Check the fuel pressure regulator.
by starting the car with your foot on the accelerator pedal half the way if it starts and continue running while you are holdining yore foot on and stops as soon as you take it off the accelerator .
then change the fuel pressure regulator it is located under hood in the rear side at top of the engine.

What would cause an 04 f-150 to die after start up and not refire?

Try cranking the truck with your foot on the accelerator pedal. Just crack the throttle open a little and try to start. If the truck starts then dies when you take your foot off the accelerator, you have a bad, what is called an IAC valve. It is what controls the Idle Air bypassing the throttle.

My 2005 ford escape has a terrible squeek coming from under the gas pedal. It becomes worse as I accelerate. I can't find any type of linkage to lube.

there is nothing under the floor of the pedal will make that terrible squeak sound. have your belt check make sure they are tight and not slipping, it will also make that loud squeak sound if it slips. go to auto parts store and purchase a can of WD40 and spray it on all the pulley under the hood. have the engine off while spraying the pulleys. don't worry if it get on other parts of the engine. Common problems with pulleys squeaking on many vehicle.

2002 Escape

no...the valve can be replaced without any "computer change"...the PCM constantly monitors variations in sensor signal strength and accommodates changes to compensate for this. A new valve will not "un-calibrate" the PCM. The PCM will merely begin a new "data record" for it....with possible slow results at first lasting from as short as one minute to possibly nearly a week of driving.
