More than likely it is a bad ignition coil (ignition module), that is common to have soddered internal connections that fail as engine heat and cools, have you changed the fuel filter yet? it is required maintanance and should be done either way.....i can see your symptoms in a plugged/restricted filter.....let me know, marty

The cranking problem could be a weak battery, bad connection between the battery and the starter, or a weak starter. Sometimes the brushes in a starter stick and don't make contact.
The check engine light should come on when the key switch is on and then go off once the engine starts.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee doesnt start half the time

Sounds like a poor connection somewhere...Best time to check is when it's in no-start condition...When running, obviously whatever isn't working is (temporarily). Once you identify the system (fuel, spark etc) that's not working, check all wires and connectors for good contact and continuity.

Van wont start

you may find you have a bad earth somewhere, so i would check the earths. if you have a bad earth at wont matter how long you leave it running the charge will just dissipate, then i would check the alternator again if its not working it wont matter how long you leave your engine running it will not charge the battery.
