I had a similar problem that could only be sorted by pulling out oem fuse number 32 i think The bottom of the 2 plastic fuse holders. Pull it from fuse slot but not all the way out give it a few seconds then press back in mine would run ok then. I think it reset the BCM which was playing havoc with the start management module.
Sounds like it may just be a bad battery connection, or possibly a shorted cell in the battery,
Did u put another motor in? I have seen a motor do this and we pulled the exhaust from the manifold before the catalic covertor and it started. we found the catalic convertor had to be replaced,or it has a vacuum leak

it most definately is the crank shaft sensor. same exact prob i had. it costs about 60 bucks and 3 minutes to replace yourself. one bolt holds it into the transmission bell housing and one connector wire. very simple fix. call off the wrecker. just have plenty of ratchet extensions available i had to go in from behind the transfer case to reach the bolt but it was still pretty simple to install.

The starting issue is the same I had on my 2005 Grand Cherokee. The wire coming from the ignition (key area) to the Starter the connection is bad. The shop replaced the lead and it is perfectly fine... it cost $70. I dont know the techincal terms.. but it was easy to fix- the problem is water and junk gets splashed up by the front tire and corroded the wire into the sarter.... that's all it was.
Good luck.

My Dakota is a cousin of my Jeep. Badly corroded batery terminals were hard to clean, but fixed the problem.
