White smoke out tailpipe car has 17300.00 miles

White smoke is coolant being burnt in the cylinder,
most likely from a failed head gasket

I would think a 1989 is too old to fix
Cost more than the car is worth

Any oil useage between oil changes every
say 3000 to 4500 miles is too much, engine is
worn

White smoke coming out of tail pipe.

WHITE smoke? Or BLUE smoke? White smoke is usually caused by burning antifreeze (possible blown head gasket). Engine oil burning causes a bluish colored smoke.

Changing the oil two months ago means absolutely nothing to me. I have customers that travel 6000 miles or more in a month. Oil consumption is measured in volume over miles, not volume over months. It is normal for most 4 cylinder engines to use a little less than 1/2 quart in 1000 miles (even more than that for 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder engines).

Hi, My Sidekick starts to "putter" as i drive like it's not getting enough fuel. Then when I accelerate it blows large amounts of white smoke out the exhaust. It did this once before last summer...

White smoke always means that oil is getting into the cylinder. This will make the car sputter. You have to find out why the oil is getting in there. It needs to go to a mechanic because it could be any number of reasons why the oil is getting in.

If the car is smoking through the muffler then its burning the oil if not, check for a loose engine filter or leaky oil pressure sensor that leaks only when the car is running.

2005 mazda 3 2.3l that is burning oil (no leaks)

possibly the pcv but check if your cars exhaust smoke is blueish or white in color if it does and your car doesnt have an oil leak then sure its burning engine oil along with fuel, the piston rings is defective, since you replaced engine oil the additive that the owner has put with the oil to prevent blowby is gone thats why it starts burning oil.....

My crystler concord just got an oil change 2 to 3 weeks ago and i changed the oil filter, but the oil level is already low, what does that mean?

Does the car emit blue smoke from the exhaust when driving? If so, either the piston rings or valve seals could be bad (expensive repair). The PCV valve could also be bad. The last reason (but no blue smoke) might be a physical oil leak due to a loose oil filter, drain plug, leaking oil pressure sensor, or worn crankshaft seal. Good luck!

I have a 3000GT VR4 from 1997. A month ago I had almost no oil in the car, way before due oil change. Yesterday, white smoke was coming out of the exhaust. One mechanic told me last week that I need a...

Hi Maria,

Does the white smoke occur at start up then go away?
Was it cooler out the night before the white smoke started?

Likely it's condensation burning off.

To be on the safe side have a compression test run on all cylinders. It's a quick, easy and cheap way to find out if the head gasket is ok.

Also, I strongly advise you to get some second or third opinions for the remaining symptoms. Something smells fishy. I'm sure you know what I mean.

If you comment back or repost, I will do my best to help you out.

Best regards
Mike

Burning oil

Hi again,

For some unknown reason(s) the Live Session/Chat was disconnected. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

In any case to finish the 2nd suggestion. You may want to discuss this issue (smoke and oil consumption) with your dealer. Cite a Lexus Technical Service Bulletin specifically addressing this issue "Excessive oil consumption caused by sludge buildup on the cylinder heads. Company is extending warranty. (1997-2001)".

You may want to reference this USA Today article or the discussion in this page.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
