There is quite a bit of play in the left tied rod - rack end.Is this adjustable - Ford Focus TDCI 2.0 2005/6

When turning ,accelerating and decelerating at times I can feel the left wheel pulling out and coming back in on the steering .When stationary on a flat smooth surface and the engine running a definite play can be heard and felt at the left rack end when turning the wheel.

Why are you using the vehicle?

It is obvious you have a failed steering rack &
possibly other suspension components are worn
& loose,not adjustable

SOURCE: 2002 ford escape tie rod squeaks

My outer tie rod did the same thing when just out of warranty. I could tell it was "bad" by putting my hand on the tie rod while someone else turned the steering a little and I could easily feel the vibration.
Check the other side to feel the difference. Tie rods don't cost that much, if you can replace it yourself, and take a chance on foregoing the wheel alignment. Maybe a $150? job at the shop.
In my case, a tie rod was not readily available. I verified that it was a good joint; no shake or rattle. Then I squirted a little WD40 inside the boot, and put it back together. 70,000 miles later, the new tie rod is still on my shelf waiting for the squeak to return.

SOURCE: How are the tie rod ends connected to the rack

The inner tie rod is threaded onto the rack. There is a tool called an inner tie rod end tool, than will help make it a lot easier to remove. The tool can be found at any good parts store or tool store. The shaft of the inner tie rod will spin. It has a ball that is pressed into a socket. The socket is the part that has the threads onto the rack.

The way you tell if they are back is by grabbing the tire at the 3 and 6 position and pushing/pulling. If you feel any movement than look carefully at the inner tie rod and the outer tie rod to see which one is letting the wheel move.

SOURCE: 2001 Impala,

Has to be a drive axle, most likely an inner joint, should be able to feel the play if one is bad (jacked up to let the wheel spin freely).
Also. If the front suspension is weak,or lowered, the CV axle will bottom out in the inner plunge cup and make a terrible vibration.

Testimonial: "You Called it !! Both axles were worn out at inner joint left boot blownout dry barings, right axle needle barings gone, baring floating around inside"

I need to rplace the inner tie rods.

Inner tie rods rarely if ever need to be replaced in my experience: outer tie rod ends are far more common. Its not impossible so here's how.

1. remove the tie rod ends from the knuckle.
2. remove the clamp for the rubber bellows on the rack ends, and slide the bellows down the rod.
3. Turn the rack to fullleft or right as needed to get access to the inner rod end that screws into the rack.
4. There's a lock tab that has to be bent flat. This locks the rod end into the rack.
5. You'll need a (probably) 32mm wrench to undo the rod end from the rack.
6. Note how the lock tab is fitted to the rack/rod end.

7. Put in the new tie rods.

If your garage mechanic told you the inner tie rods are worn out, I'd ask why they think so. At step 4. above, try rotating the rod. This should be quite difficult. There should be NO evidence of slop or wear in the inner joint. What more commonly wears is the bushes on the end of the rack. These bushes are easily replacable with the rack in the car.The tie rods have to be removed to do this. So, when the rods are off, inspect the rack bushes for wear.

The left side tie rod seems to have slop on the rack & pinion side. Tie rod outter end is good.what is it?

Worn inner tie rod joint,on the steering rack

If you go to an alignment only shop, not some
chain store, with an alignment rack, they will
change it for you, if it can be done

Then you have to set all the front end adjustments

Don't let them pitch you, a complete rack assy
Moog-- makes those inner tie rods, and you put your
good outer joint on it

How to replace the tie rod end

Tie rod ends are replaceable, whether the steering system is rack and pinion or parallelogram steering system.
f42-02.gif Parallelogram steering system mounts. Figure A - behind front suspension; and Figure B - ahead of front suspension. f42-04.gif A rack and pinion steering system. Tie rod ends are threaded to provide a means of adjusting toe. When a tie rod is replaced, measure the old tie rod assembly before disassembling it. An approximate toe-in adjustment can be made to the new one prior to installation. When removing the old tie rod end, count the number of turns it takes to remove it. Then, turn the new tie rod end onto its threads the same number of turns.
Some vehicles have tie rods that appear to be the same on both ends. The difference is in the threads. One end has left hand threads and the other has right hand threads. It is possible to install the entire shaft backwards (which will work). Mark the tie rod to identify the inner or ourter end before removing it.
Before tightening tie rod clamps, check to see that they are in good condition and are positioned properly so they can be clamped tightly. Before doing a front end adjustment, spray penetrating oil on the threads of the tie rods. Do this during the steering linkage inspection so the lubricant has time to soak in.

My mustang 95 steering wheel moves like a1/2 an inch to the left and to the right when the engine is off how I can fix or adjustment,by the way,I changed the inner tie rod

This is the PLAY in the steering box and can be adjusted to minimise in the penumatic section.
Tighten the tie rods ends and ccheck for any play in either ends. If not the play is from the steering column to the rack . You can tighten to make it fit closer BUT do not over tighten.
Now start the car and check the movement to either side.
If needs trimming do so , stop engine adjust and try again. Check for fluid in the system.

Replace rack/pinion

The book calls for about 5 hours labor with a lift, air tools, and experience. It's a tough job. Here are a few tips, Take the lines loose from the rack; not the pump. With the tires off, Remove the nuts from the outer tie rods.Run the nuts back on the tie rods stud and hit the steering knuckle where the tie rod's stud goes through. This will free the stud. Remove the steering shaft from the rack.(take the bolt all the way out.Remove rack mounting bolts. Twist, pull ****,and fight the rack out the side of the car with the most room. The new rack will have inner tie rods already installed. Make sure the new rack is centered.(Turn left then right count the turns then center same # of turns from left to right). Count the threads or measure from the outer tie rod's jam nut to the last thread on the inner tie rod.(you can leave the jam nut in place and take the outer tie rod off and measure from the jam nut to the end of the rod.)Install the outer tie rods. Replace rack in car. hook up steering shaft.Bolt up rack. Hook up lines. Add fluid and work rack back and forth to bleed air. recheck fluid. Have it aligned. (or just take it to a shop. This job is going to be a nightmare!!!)

I have a ford expedition 1997 with a lot of play in the sterring wheel, i just recently had an aliment

play is really only caused by 2 things , the tie rod ends are loose or worn, the steering rack is coming apart, if this play was not there before the alignment then they may have left the tie rod adjusters loose.
