Recently on two occasions the car started fine and I was driving down a garage ramp when the car died. Pulled into a open space, car turned over strong, but wouldn't kick in. Next day car turned over fine and kicked in on 10 try's. Several days later it did the same thing going down a small hill. Pulled over parked. Had car towed to garage, next day car started right up and did so on 10 trys. HELP

Hey Roach!

Sounds like the good old fuel pump relay problem, typical for these cars. Open the hood and remove the fusebox cover (4 torx screws) to gain access to the relays located there. One of them is probably a green one (I think it's labeled 103). If so you have the old type of relay and should replace it with the new and improved one, which is red (I think the part # is 9434225, but just make sure that you get a RED relay). A used one is cheap and should do just fine.

Like tonygrantham said; the problem is with spark, fuel delivery or compression. Checking a plug for spark is easy: Just unscrew it and hold it to ground with a pair of insulated pliers or something similar while the problem is present. Have someone crank the engine while you look for spark. If the engine starts while lacking one plug it will sound horrible, but will not be harmed as long as you don¨'t run it for long and don't rev it.

If you've got both spark and fuel you might want to check compression and timing even though they are, in my opinion, unlikely culprits.

Good luck, mate!

Id start with fuel, make sure it's gettin fuel. then check your fire, spark plugs dist, ect. 75% of the time that's where you will find the problem with those troubles

if you can get it running long enough to have the codes pulled i would invest in getting that checked as well.

Yeah, I would have a load test performed on battery. Make sure shifter is all the way in park or neutral to start. Safety switch prevents cranking unless in those two positions. If manual shifter, could be "neutral safety switch" ?

Driving cars up ramps on slippery surfaces

I cant take credit for this one, but I do have an improvement. do your ramps "skate" accross the smooth garage floor as you try to drive up them? Same thing in gravel? An old tie down or seat belt strapped to the top of the ramps and placed under both wheels on the same side of the ramp will stop it from sliding away. For better results, my improvement is to fasten the strap around the drive wheel so it is essentially a pully making sure the ramp goes under the wheel.
*****disclaimer Note that ramps are really dangerous, make sure there are other people around, underneeth, infront, behind, or anywhere else. be careful, its easy to launch off ramps or put them all the way underneeth the car.

Ford escape alternator

Place a voltmeter on the battery and read it before and after it starts. If it shows an increase in voltage, then the alternator is working. The voltage goes down as the battery becomes fully charged. Many garages will check it for free.

You need to clean the IAC again and also the throttle valve and bore, use only CRC brand Throttle body cleaner. After they are thoroughly cleaned disconnect the battery for 5 min's and then drive the car in varying condition for a few days. If that doesn't cure the issue you have more serious problems and will need a scan tool to look into the readings from the MAF, TPS and ECT sensors. High idle cold start is normal then slowly dropping after a few minutes. I assume you never had a check engine light. Correct?

97 bonneville cylinder 6

I would say a zero chance of the fuel pump being the cause.
Could be the spark plug, wire or coil - or a vac leak or the fuel injector.

ok get in contact with i garage that have a data logger to clip on to your obd test outlet. you drive fore some days and just write the time down when th car is doing poorly then the garage can take the obd logger and se all engine parameters on that time the engine was lacking power. after that the garage can fix the problem just locking at fault codes don't give you the full picture. good luck Han
