My 1995 Dodge Caravan started making a VERY LOUD lawnmower sound. I looked under the hood and noticed a frayed cord behind the engine. Not sure what is going on.

Wheel Bearings sometimes make this noise when on there way out..
change quickly or they could disintegrate ,and collapse..

hi is it miss-firing as it sounds like a knocking noise can be anything but if you can feel it on the accelerater pedal then the noise sounds like its on the inlet valve side which would transfere the noise up the throttle body where the accelerater is located it could be something as simple as a tappet come loose to a burned valve you need to have a look do a compression test and take the rocker cover off see if theres anything come loose yates210456

Misalignment of the belt, incorrect belt, worn or loose tensioner, Too tight of an adjustment (many service centers do this on purpose so when the belt breaks in it becomes properly adjusted, I do not believe in this philosophy), The belt is actually one long belt called a serpentine belt.....

What would a knocking machine gun sound be under hood. I just started it and somewhere under the hood is a LOUD Knocking like a Machine Gun sound.
Is it metalling sound ? if that's the case then don't drive it .. you might be having issues with connecting rod or the bearings in the both cases engine will seize. Consult a auto technician, but you wont have engine light on due to this.

If it is knocking due to misfire (which is mostly the case as the engine light is also on) .... than find which cylinder have the issue then clean or replace the spark plug. If you can get a scanner to read the car computer it will solve the issue in a blink. Otherwise start the engine ... open the hood .pull out spark plug connector one by one and notice the change in sound... the one that is bad will have no effect on the sound.

Sounds like you have a high voltage arc. Test this theory at night. Have someone try to start the engine in a dark place while you look over the engine for lightning. If it is what I am guessing, try to see if it is coming from the spark plug wires or the cap or the plugs. If that is not the cause of the problem get back to me...it could be alot of things! If it is lightningngngng, change out all the wires, the cap and the rotor!

It's one of the pulleys that needs to have the bearing replaced most likely. Check for wobbling pulleys where ever the belt makes contact.
