4wd control switch was bad. it shifted out of 4wd by itself into neutral, replaced. drove fine but after about fifteen minutes it seemed like it was stuck in neutral again, wait a few and it will drive but does the same thing.

IT IS NOT GOING INTO NEUTRAL. IT HAS LOST THE DIRECT DRIVE CLUTCH PACK INTERNALLY. SOUNDS LIKE IT IS HIGH MILEAGE. IF SO AND YOU CHANGE THE FLUID IT CLEANS UP ALL THE VARNISH IN THE TRANNY AND THE END RESULT IS TRANNY MALFUNCTIONS DEPENDING ON WHAT KIND OF CARE IT HAS HAD IN THE PAST.

Sounds like you may have burned out the reverse clutch pack inside the transmission by going from drive to reverse. I would recommend seeing a transmission shop for verification. Hope this helps

8/19/2009 I had this problem and it cost me 2700.00 to repair the truck. The problem is the "encoder Modual" that controls the 2/4 system. Unfortunately I did not know and my rear end needed to be repaired. The encoder cost about 388.00 at the dealer, good luck
