Car won't engage starter

My son came home from work and tried to install a new radio in his 04 tiburon(radio still not working). When he tried to start car, starter would not engage. I have tested the starter and even jumped the starter system at the starter relay switch under the hood. The starter will engage and turn the motor over with no problem. Tested the relay switch and it works fine. With the key in the on position, I have tried to start motor with a jumper wire to the relay switch and there is no spark at the spark plugs. Bought a new ignition switch that attaches to the back side of the key assembly and the starter will still not engage and the engine wont start by jumper wire to relay switch to engage starter. Any ideas what has happened?

At the starter relay, you have two red or purple wires, one goes to the starter and the other comes from a 30amp fuseable link. Is that fuseable link circuit hot ?
From the key switch, power goes thru the alarm relay, then the clutch safety switch or automatic selector switch, then to the starter relay. The fourth wire on the starter relay is a ground.
You should be able to put power to the starter relay on the white or yellow wire coming from the safety switch to make the relay engage.
My guess is something wrong with the alarm system.

Hi. This sounds like your "Neutral Safety switch". It's designed so that you don't start your car in gear in drive and accidentally crash.

Here is the part at autozone.

... These are in the shifter on most cars, but sometimes they are hidden on top of the transmission. I'm sorry, I don't have a book on your exact model.

Hope that helps.

SOURCE: starter tested good but still wont start

test you battery at parts store they can load test it for you headlites int lights are nominal draw. wipers blowers pull a little more current. but have it tested under load which duplicate the significant draw of a starter.

SOURCE: we just bought a used

First of all did you check all fuses if so that ok, next did not mention changing crankshaft sensor. When you remove ht leads that go to spark plugs are they sparking use rubber handled pliers to do this or you will get a shock, if they ok did you set the clearence on the new plugs correctly?. also when cranking check with magni-stick pen to make sure injectors pulsing ie;getting signal. also immobilizer could cause engine to to start, usually light will flash on display to tell you this.last thing just make sure timing belt not snapped usually heard by engine turns faster than normal.

Car wont start has charged battery lights and radio come on new starter. drainging battery even though the battery is fully charged its reading its not tempature gauge reading hot but its not runn

If the problem began when (or soon after) installing the new starter, start checking there. Ensure that all cables to the starter are tight. As a second possibility, if the new starter was actually a rebuilt replacement, the solenoid could be faulty. (I went through three rebuilt starters on my son's truck until we got one that worked properly.)

Hi,
Probably has a security code. It's in the owner's manual or you'll have to take it to the dealer.

04 jeep grand cherokee won't start just drags,

Could be a failing starter or problems with the cables.
A dead cell in the battery will do it too.

Just finished driving car, tried to start it back up and nothing happens. Radio works fine, lights come up but car won't start.

if starter is not engaging or clicks then have battery load tested. if battery checks good then test the voltage draw on the starter, may be dragging when it gets hot.

2004 ion won't start. Lights work. When I turn key don't get series of clicks, get one snap.

That symptom usually means the solenoid on the starter is bad and no longer is completing the circuit to engage the starter. A new starter will likely solve that issue. A series of rapid clicks would indicate a week battery. You can try repeatedly turning the key to the start position rapidly, sometimes the starter wil start working. You can also try tapping the starter while somebody holds the key in the start position, if the starter engages place it.

Car losing battery

Possible faulty starter motor. If it is stuck on, you will not always know, it will drain your battery and burn itself out, particularly the solenoid. It could blow other fuses, check and replace if required. Try replacing starter motor. Some times you can give the starter motor a sharp tap and it will work but not always, first sign of a dodgy starter motor is click click click.

Return the battery and get another, sometimes because the battery set there too long and won’t work, I had twice when I had my Union 76 Station, after you try it, if you still can not start your son’s car. Let discuss more.
