Any codes? If not then use the KISS method K eep I t S imple S tupid. Not insulting you just a way to remind oneself that MOST problem can be solved by the most simple solutions. 1. Is there fuel in the tank? 2. What is the battery voltage before AND during starting? Engine co mputer
Any codes? If not then use the keep it simple stupid method. This is not an insult. It helps to remind you that most problems are solved by the most simple solutions. 1. Is there enough fuel in the fuel tank? You can always check the fuel filters later. 2. What is the battery voltage before and when cranking the engine? Enginge computers require a minimum of 10 volts while cranking to operate. You can have 12 before but if while you are cranking the engine the battery voltage drops to below 10 volts it WILL NOT start no matter how fast it is spinning over. The sound can be deceiving, it will sound like it's spinnung over fast enough but if the baterries are reading 8 or9 volts the the computer will not operate and the engine will not start. 3 Is the engine getting enough air? I had a couple come into the shop a few years ago in their motorhome and they had been to 3 different dealerships with no luck. They had no codes but the engine was hard starting and low on power. As i did my walk around filling out my paperwork I noticed they traveled quite a bit in their motorhome. The hint was a big map of the USA on the right rear side with stickers of every state they had been to. I asked them if they had recently been out west and been caught in any dust storms. They replied they had and how they had been in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Then they said they had got stck in a campground for an extra day because of a bad dust storm running the engine alot. I walked straight back to the engine bay of the camper and pulled out the primary and secondary air filters there was so much dirt in them I had to get a garbage can to put them in while I got almost a gallon bucket full of dirt out of the filter housing. I couldn't believe the engine was still running,I got some cleaner removed all the piping to and from the filters plus the filter housing and cleaned them spotless before reinstalling them with new filters. The engine started right up and we took it for a test drive down the interstate. Lucky for the owner there were no troopers around because that motorhome was flying. He said that was the best it had ran in he couldn't remember when. I also had done a complete oil change and lube on it AND serviced the generator . Anything like low coolant or low oil could prevent it from starting however these usually would throw a code but hey check them any way just to be on the safe side. Any smoke comimg out the exhaust and if so what color? You always hear if you have white smoke coming out the exhaust it's coolant well with a diesel engine it could be signs of unburned fuel, a dribbling injector or more will flood the chamber and can't ignight so you have a white mist of basically raw fuel being blown out the exhaust. Hold a piecce of paper over the exhaust if it is smoking and you will smell if it's coolant or diese, or even oil. Check for fuel leaks, if it's leaking fuel it could be sucking air into the fuel line which would also prevent a start. I would think it would throw a code for low fuel pressure but even a little air can mess injection up by causing cavitation. Just about anything else should throw some kind of code.If you do pull the fuel filters check for water, or heaven forbid some idiot may have put sugar in your tank but if they did you will find it in your filter. Contrary to popular belief sugar is not soluble in diesel and what happens is it just clogs every thing up then all the lines, tank , everything had to be taken off up to the fuel filter and cleaned completely then reinstalled and the system primed. Hope I was able to give you a start on where to look first. Also check to see if it has a saeyty fuel shutoff switch on the right front fenderwell like the gas models do , if so you just push it to reset it. If the switch is dood another easy check with a test light or meter.
