Intermitente starting problems & transmission seemed to go out the other day while driving it

I HAVE A 98 GMC JIMMY THAT HAS INTERMITIVE STARTING PROBLEMS (SOMETIMES IT STARTS FINE & SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T WANT TO START & i HAVE THE RED SECURITY LIGHT FLASHING UNTIL I PUT THE KEY FORWARD FOR 15 MINUTES AND THEN TURN IT OFF AND THEN START IT) AS WELL AS HAVING INTERMITIVE PROBLEMS WITH THE SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING, AND THE RPMS ON MY 98 GMC JIMMY SEEM TO GO CRAZY AT TIMES AND GO UP FOR NO EXPLAINED REASON AND THEN GOES BACK TO NORMAL, AND JUST THE OTHER DAY WHILE DRIVING IT THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING AND IT WOULD NO LONGER DRIVE FOWARD OR REVERSE & HAD TO BRING IT HOME WITH A WRECKER (I JUST RECENTLY HAD MY TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY REBUILT LESS THAN 8 MONTHS AGO) ALSO NOW WHEN I START THE TRUCK IT HAS SMOKE THAT IS COMING FROM THE EXHAUST & SMELLS LIKE GASOLINE. WE REPLACED THE BATTERY 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS BECAUSE ALL THE TRYING TO START IT SEEMS TO KILL THE BATTERY. WE ALSO REPLACED THE STARTER LESS THAN A MONTH AGO HOPING THAT WOULD FIX IT BUT THAT WAS BEFORE THE TRANNY WENT OUT WE ALSO CHECKED THE TRANNY FLUID WHICH WAS CLEAN LOOKING AND IT WAS ONLY LOW ABOUT A 1/4 OF A QUART, THE MOTOR OIL LOOKS FINE ALSO. I AM HOPING IT'S NOT THE TRANSMISSION AGAIN BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD TO GET IT REBUILT AGAIN.

Sounds more like an engine issue off the top of my head. The transmission runs off the vacuum from the engine. If the engine timing chain is stretched it will run then not run, have problems idling and shifting and won't charge the battery properly. anyone who has done one before could probably tell you just by the sound of the engine running.

Testimonial: "What is that the "timing belt"? Would that also cause the the truck to not start at times and the speedometer to go crazy at times? Everyone I've asked about what it could be they all say I need my transmission rebuilt again...but since I'm a woman I feel that they are just trying to find the most expensive repair so they can of course make $ (my husband & I split up about a month ago & I was always used to him handling the repairs for our vehicles but he hasn't answered my calls when I've asked him to take the truck to a shop to have it diagnosed & looked at) and since I don't have much $ I wanted to try to get a idea of what it could actually be before I pay a wrecker to take it to any mechanic so I'll know if I should send it to a transmission shop, general mechanic or a shop that diagnoses & fixes electrical problems on cars. Because I can't afford to have it towed to multiple different shops. I was wondering if anyone here knew a good trustworthy mechanic in or around Channelview Texas?"

the timing belt/chain makes sure the valves and cylinders operate correctly, 'on time' so to speak. If it out, then the valves open at the wrong part of the cycle and the engine will die until you crank it over a bunch of times and it ends up in the right timing again. So yes the no start could be from timing. The speedo impossible to say for sure without being there, could be a number of things. Honestly, much cheaper than rebuilding a transmission is getting an auto wrecker to install a used one from their inventory of wrecked vehicles. The part is usually 150$, their labour the same or double, so call it 500$, at least around here. It is possible you have multiple issues that all came home at the same time.

Make sure your transmission gear position and throttle cable are adjusted properly. The rev of the engine and changing of gears needs to be coordinated between the two. Especially the throttle cable position. I believe theres a sensor which detects the throttle position which is cooridinated with the transmission shifting.

The first thing I would want to know is where the fluid is going.
If the transmission has an electrical problem with a sensor or solenoid, you should have a check engine light with a trouble code.

Testimonial: "Where is the fluid going, was the first thing I thought about, so I check the oil and surprisingly it was down a quart. While on the express way the light stated "Please idle engine, transmission hot". After sitting a while, and adding the transmission fluid, I tried to drive again and heard a rattling noise, but the light never came on again. "

PROBLEMS WITH IGNITION SWITCH CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH MY SPEEDOMETER AS WELL AS MY TRANSMISSION

definitely sounds like timing after reading over your other posts. I had a pontiac die unexpectedly on me in the same way, but luckily i knew an expert mechanic who filled me in. Passing it on to you as the likely culprit. about 800 to pay someone to do it, or it is actually not hard to do yourself with a socket set, screwdriver, gear puller and a weekend. Did mine with absolutely no experience at all (I was 16) and it worked perfect afterwards.
