Change the oil pressure sending unit on the eng. if this goes bad it sends the wrong voltage to the computer which will then detune the engine to reduce the chance of damage due to low oil pressure . Good Luck

SOURCE: low oil pressure indicator at low rpms (idle) '97 olds V8

Low pressure when at idle, after the engine has warmed up and the oil has thinned, indicates that the oil pump is worn and needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: oil level system

It may seem obvious but do not operate the engine with it overheating as this can lead to more trouble including a cracked engine block.

Low engine oil pressure is a problem because if it exists, the critical engine parts may not get lubricated properly and may fail. Since you have ruled out external leaks, here are some possibilities:

Clogged oil filter or obstruction in the system

Loose wire or faulty oil pressure or oil level sending switch/sensor.

Possible blown head gasket. This is a serious problem that might be accompanied by white or blue exhaust smoke and a burnt coolant or oil odor. Check for oil contamination with coolant. The dipstick may show a brown milky film/sludge or smell like burnt coolant indicating contamination.

Engine oil pump is possibly bad. This is a serious problem. It's usually time to swap out or rebuild the engine, particularly if it has many miles.

Possible but unlikely in this case is a problem with PCU (Power Control Unit) that runs the Information Center. PCU problems are often indicated by getting other unrelated errors on the info display or "DATE NOT AVAILABLE" for extended periods when you start the car.

You did not mention the Check Engine/Service Engine Soon light being on, but if so I would get the trouble codes read at the OBD II connector. The codes might indicate a sensor problem. Some auto stores do this for free. Either way, I would assume the worse case scenario (bad oil pump) and address it immediately. Unfortunately, due to the complex nature of the car, most things are not easy to diagnose and repair by the do-it-yourselfer. Hopefully though it is just a sensor but with a temperature rise, I would be careful.

Best of Luck!

SOURCE: while i'm idling at a dead stop, the oil pressure

Have the oil pressure tested with an accurate mechanical gauge. often the sending unit goes bad, but without testing it could cost you an engine before you find the problem.
If the mechanical gauge shows same low readings, you have internal engine wear (likely worn crank/rod bearings) Then, it's your decision on whether to drive it till it expires, repair it or buy a new vehicle.

SOURCE: Oil Pressure Low Warning

Look low oil pressure is nothing to ignore, serious engine damage will result, have the dealer test the oil press with a special oil press tester, if that checks ok then you most likely have a defective oil pressure sensor.

I have a Saab 93 2002 Turbo 2lt with a low oil pressure warning alarm coming on. The oil level is correct and I have also replaced oil and filter. The warning light now comes on after 60km, but vanishes if...

the first thing to do is to have the oil pressure read using a mechanical gauge
that ensures that you know that the engine is running with the right oil pressure
you can test the ECM operation by using a substitute ECM that is a known good unit
run the fault codes to see in the oil pressure sensor is a problem
At this point , test the oil pressure as suggested then change the oil pressure sensor

Started with Oil Pressure dropping

DTC P0521: Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Sensor Performance

The engine oil pressure (EOP) sensor changes voltage based on the engine oil pressure. The EOP sensor is a 3-wire sensor comprising of the signal circuit, the low reference circuit and the 5-volt reference circuit. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 volts to the EOP sensor via the 5-volt reference circuit and provides ground via the EOP low reference circuit. The ECM monitors the signal circuit of the EOP sensor to determine the EOP sensor voltage is within the normal operating range of approximately 1-4 volts. When the engine oil pressure is high, the EOP sensor voltage is high and the ECM senses a high signal voltage. When the engine oil pressure is low, the EOP sensor voltage is low and the ECM senses a low signal voltage. The ECM sends the EOP information to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) via GMLAN serial data message.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
P0521
The ECM detects that the difference between the predicted oil pressure and the actual oil pressure is either less than 47 kPa (6.8 psi) or greater than 50 kPa (7.3 psi).

Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop that has the proper diagnostic testing equipment to diagnose this.

2005 grand Prix oil pressure light an dinging comes on

1. Check your oil level. If oil level is not ok, correct oil level and find out why oil level was low and correct the problem. (Leaks, bad PCV, Burning oil due to severe engine wear, nobody has bothered to check it for the last 3000 miles, WAY overdue for an oil change, etc.) If oil level is ok, proceed to next step.

2. Remove the oil pressure sensor and install a manual oil pressure gauge. Run engine to verify low oil pressure. If gauge shows that the oil pressure is low, overhaul or replace engine. If oil pressure is ok, replace oil pressure sending unit and retest.

OIL PRESSURE LOW...i CHANGED OIL AND PRESSURE IS FINE UNTIL JEEP GETS WARM AND WHILE IDLEING PRESSURE DROPS TO ZERO AND CHEK GUAGE LIGHT COMES ON.dID THE SAME BEFORE OIL AND FILTER CHANGE.

How many miles are on the engine? Have you tried to replace the oil pressure switch? is the engine making any type of noise due to low pressure reading?

Oil pressure guage shows low to nothing

Hi there
You should check the oil pressure sensor/wiring should be located around the oil filter area usually.
If you can't see any obvious issues than post another question with you progress and ill help you work through it...

Low Oil Pressure and rough idle

Please understand, all I can offer you are suggestions, since I don't have access to hands on testing. You might first change oil and filter.
If going by the oil pressure guage, low oil pressure can mean worn crankshaft bearings, as the clearance between bearings and crankshaft is what determines oil pressure.
Of course a worn oil pump can cause the same problem.
You might want to connect an external oil pressure guage to the engine to verify the pressure reading.

The rough running at this point would be hard to pin poit.
Because I do not know the extent of the rust, I can suggest that you consider having it undercoated.

Again, I can only make suggestion because you need an absoluate diagnosis.
