Many thermostats have a gasket installed between the thermostat housing and the engine block / waterpump. If the the thermostat is bolted securely - you may need to remove the thermostat and replace the gasket. While you're there - swap out the thermostat too. It's one of those "Two birds / one stone" kind of thing. See the "..Blown Head Gasket..." link below.
How to Avoid Blown Head Gasket GM 3 1L 3 4L
SOURCE: leaking antifreeze
first, remember that any leak will run down...There is nothing near your muffler that contains antifreeze, therefore, what ever is leaking has been blown back there while driving. Open up the hood and look to see where leak is originating. check all hoses, hose connections, radiator, rug under heater in the cab and everything associated with cooling system. You will see antifreeze coming out somewhere. Once you locate the leak, I can help you deal with it. Do not open the radiator when engine is hot! Do not drive with low coolant condition! This is not a solution...yet...I'ts the beginning of one!

check to see if the electric fan is coming on when it should. Also check coolant level. Also, you may have the beginning of a plugged radiator If all else is OK flush radiator out.

it is normally located on the top of the engine look at the upper radiator hose and follow that back to the engine and then you will find the thermostat and you can try www.autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you

Check out your freeze plugs. They are thin metal cups that press fit into the side of the block. Use a mirror and a light to inspect while the engine is running.
