I have 107,000 miles on my Odyssey. Yesterday, (after the car sat all night), between 1st and 2nd gear the transmission slipped (like it was in neutral) and after driving it about 5 minutes the problem quit. Again after sitting 9 hours, the transmission slipped again and after driving it for about 5 minutes the problem stopped again. The check engine light was on and after hooking up a code reader it said P0740. Am I looking at an expensive fix?
Code p0740 is a problem in lock up control solenoid assembly, Check whether scan tool indicates another code. Does the scan tool indicate another code? YES - Perform the Troubleshooting Flowchart for the indicated Code(s). Do not continue with this troubleshooting until the causes of any other DTCs have been corrected. Measure the line pressure. Is the line pressure within the service limit? Repair the hydraulic system as necessary. Replace the Lock-up Control Solenoid Assembly set lock-up control solenoid valve/shift control solenoid valve A assembly and the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A/B assembly. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and reset the PCM memory by removing the BACK UP fuse in the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box for more than 10 seconds . Using the scan tool, check to be sure that the engine coolant temperature is 176°F (80°C) or above . Drive the vehicle at 55 mph (88 km/h) for more than one minute . Recheck for code P0740. Does the OBD II scan tool indicate code P0740? YES - Remove the torque converter and inspect for a missing torque converter O-ring. If the O-ring is damaged or missing, replace the transmission and torque converter. NO - The system is OK at this time.
I had a 2002 Odyssey that was acting up like it woudn't want to go into gear and the tach would rev. My code scanner said P'0740'. I cleared it several times and it came back. Finally, I took it into the shop when I was forced to shut it down in a drive-thru window line and restart to get it going. The result: transmission needed rebuild, $2455.00 (OUCHH!)
P0740 will not directly cause it to "go into neutral", but is a partial indicator as to cause and affect. Most likely the clutch in the torque converter is slowly disintegrating, and that particulate matter is going thru the trans and plugging up the filter screen. The loss of a gear is definitely an internal failure. A full overhaul is what is needed to fix it.
Yes, the fix will most likely be expensive. I have a 99 model with a slipping trans. Took to the garage only to find the main shaft gear burnt up inside the housing. Most likely started with a bad sensor.
