Most consumer available scanners read OBDII on 96 or newer vehicles. If your car does in fact have a OBDII plug then all you need is the software in your scanner to be able to read OBDI codes...a 95 is running OBDI. Advance Auto or Autozone might have a OBDI compliant scanner for free...just tell them you have the OBDII port so they don't take up all your time digging for the adapter!

Can I retrieve codes manually from a 95 bonneville

If it has OBD1 for a diagnostic system you can get the trouble codes by making the check engine light flash.
If it has OBD2 you'll need a scanner or code reader. Most auto parts stores will check OBD2 for free in hopes of selling you some parts.
You can do an internet search for OBD1 codes and see if the connector plug looks like yours. If it does you can use a paper clip to jumper two connectors and make the warning light flash.
1994 and 1995 were cross-over years when the car companies switched from OBD1 to OBD2 so each model switched at a different time.

1996 pontiac sunfire car running rough and engine light on

Hello
When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

Do you have spark? Do you have fuel pressure? Do you have any electronic engine control memory codes showing on a system scan of the OBD2 system?

My1996 pontiac sunfire will turnover ,but want start . The lights go dim when you press the gas . what is wrong ?

You will have to pinpoint what the engine is missing...
- Spark
- Fuel
- Compression

All three of these are tested when the engine is being cranked over. There are two way of checking for fuel. Fuel pressure and fuel trigger. Both are very important and must be present for the engine to start. Fuel pressure is self explanatory. You just hook up the gage and see what the reading is. Fuel trigger is check with a noid light. The injector gets unplugged and the noid light gets plugged in to the injector clip. With the engine cranking over, this light must blink. This is the signal to the injectors from the computer. You can have all the fuel pressure in the world, but it wont matter if the injector is not pulsing gas into the cylinder like it should.

Compression tester, spark tester, fuel pressure gage and noid light are all accessible at your local auto store. All three tests play a very important part in diagnosing a no start condition. Be extremely careful when doing these tests.

I have a 2000 honda civic hx,the check engine is on,i replaced the timing belt, distributor, spark plugs and wires too and the check engine light is still on.the car has lost power, consumes more fuel and it...

What is the trouble code the engine light is telling you to check?

Buy a low cost OBD2 code reader and check the code(s) yourself.

The OBD2 plug is always with-in 3 feet of the steering column.

Find it and plug your tester in with the key on to retrieve the codes.

Once you have the code(s)....repair that/those item(s) first.

Need to run fail codes for f150 2000 and how to short the computer to run test

Buy a cheap OBD2 tester (about $35) and plug it in to your vehicle to show trouble codes and sensor values.
Codes can then be cleared from computer to turn off check engine light.
The OBD2 plug has to be with in 3 feet of steering column on all OBD2 equipped vehicles.

Trying to read error codes 98 pont/sunfire 2.2l

You can't read the codes this way on 95 and newer cars and light trucks (OBD 2 system), you will have to either go to a Kragen auto where they will do it for free or buy a cheap code reader for about $30-40.
